Ibotta Examined Jul 27, 2026 We carry no code Inactivity fee applies

Ibotta pays you $5. You cannot touch it until the balance reaches $20.

Think twicenot because Ibotta is a scam, it is a real grocery cash back app that pays real money. Think twice because $5 is a quarter of the way to the $20 you need before Ibotta will release anything, and a balance you stop feeding is charged $3.99 every 30 days until there is nothing left.
$5 to you$10 to your referrer$20 before you can withdrawExamined Jul 27
$5to you as the new saver, and a $10 referral credit to whoever's code you used, once you complete a qualifying offer within fourteen days of registering

We had this wrong, and it is worth saying so. This page used to tell you Ibotta published no dollar figure anywhere. It does. We were reading a referral terms URL that Ibotta has since retired into a 404, and we never checked the page that replaced it. Ibotta's live referral page states "Give $5, get $10" and repeats it in its own terms. The amounts are real. What has not changed is the part that decides whether you ever see them: a $20 minimum before Ibotta will let you withdraw, and a $3.99 charge every 30 days once the account has sat idle for six months.

A $5 bonus against a $20 floor is the whole story here. Ibotta charges an account maintenance fee of $3.99 from your accumulated earnings for every 30 days your account stays inactive, and inactive starts after 180 days with no activity. Activity has a narrow definition: redeeming an offer and receiving cash back for it, or receiving credit for one referral bonus. Take the $5, get busy, forget about it, and six months later the meter starts and the $5 is gone in one tick. Even the referrer's $10 needs a second referral behind it before it is reachable.
  • What you receive as the new saver$5
  • What the existing saver whose code you used receives$10
  • What the balance must reach before Ibotta releases anything$20

Ibotta’s own figures. The bonus stands a quarter of the height of the wall in front of it, and an idle balance loses $3.99 every 30 days.

What pays what

You, new saver, completing a qualifying offer within 14 days of registering$5
The existing saver whose code you used$10
Buying the qualifying item online or for pickupDoes not count
Registering on a device you share with the person who referred you$0 both sides
Adding the code after you have finished registering$0
Anyone who has ever had an Ibotta account$0
Your balance, after 180 days of no activityMinus $3.99 per 30 days
Getting the money out$20 minimum, 7 days after your first redemption

Do this, in this order

  1. Get the code from a person who actually knows you. Ibotta's Terms of Use say you are not eligible to earn referral bonuses if you publish your personal referral code on a public website, store or forum to refer people you do not know personally. The penalty lands on the code owner: Ibotta can rescind bonuses, correct the rewards balance and demand repayment, and can ask for screenshots proving how each referral was made. So ask a friend or a relative, and do not post your own code in a comment section.
  2. Enter the code while you are registering. Referral codes cannot be added after registration is complete. There is no support ticket that fixes it later, and both sides lose the money.
  3. Use your own phone, and a genuinely new account. The terms require the referred saver to be a new Ibotta user who registers on a unique device with the existing saver's code. Sharing a device disqualifies both of you.
  4. Buy one grocery item in a shop, and send the receipt inside 14 days. This is the step people lose. Ibotta gives the new saver a $5 Any Receipt offer, earned "upon completion of a qualifying offer within fourteen (14) days of registration with the referral code". The item can be any product, any size, any brand, but it "must be from a grocery store (in-store)", so an online or pickup order does not qualify.
  5. Treat $20 as the real finish line, not $5. Ibotta releases nothing until you have at least $20 in earnings, have redeemed at least one offer, have waited at least 7 days after that first redemption, and have verified your phone number. Payment then takes roughly 0 to 5 days depending on the method, and some gift cards carry a $25 minimum purchase. Before you link a bank: once a bank account has been linked to an Ibotta account it can never be linked to a different one, even after you unlink it.
  6. Either use it or empty it. Do not park it. If you are not going to keep scanning receipts, get to $20 and take the money, or accept that six months of quiet will start costing you $3.99 a month.

Two more lines worth knowing

The amounts can move without notice. The same terms that set the $5 and the $10 also say Ibotta reserves the right to adjust those terms or the credit and reward amounts at any time, and there is no end date on the offer. Read the figure on Ibotta's own referral page on the day you sign up.

Ibotta's own share preview is out of date. The referral page reads "Give $5, get $10", while the social preview tags on that same page still say "Give $10, Get $10 in Referral Cash from Ibotta". If a link you were sent promises $10 for you, that is where it came from. Ibotta's help centre and its own blog also contradict each other on whether Any Brand offers count for referrals, so keep the first receipt boring and in a grocery shop.

Is it worth your time?

If you already shop for groceries the way Ibotta rewards, scanning receipts weekly and clipping offers, then the app earns its place and the $5 is a small extra on the pile. What we would not do is join for the $5. It is a quarter of what Ibotta requires before it will hand you anything, so unless you keep going it is a number on a screen with a fee attached. If you want a cash back bonus you can actually collect, Rakuten states $50 for both sides in writing.
