Cash App deep dive

How much is the Cash App referral bonus? It is $10, and the $5 you keep reading is something else entirely.

Terms examined Jul 27, 2026 7 min read Widely misquoted

Cash App’s published referral bonus is $10. Enter a code, link a card, send $5 to another Cash App account: those are the three things its terms ask of a new account, and the $5 that dominates search results is the third of them, not the reward waiting at the end.

$10is the figure Cash App’s own terms name for a new customer, once you enter a referral code, link a card or bank account, and send $5 to someone else within 14 days

One list, from one Cash App document, contains both numbers:

Quoted from Cash App

“To receive the $10 referral bonus, you must:
– Download Cash App and enter the referral code. Referral codes are one time use
– Link a new debit card or bank account to your Cash App account, and keep a debit card or bank account linked until the referral bonus is paid. If you’re within ages 13-17, you can also order and activate a Cash App Card (with a parent or guardian as your sponsor).
– Send $5 to another Cash App account within 14 days of entering the referral code. The recipient account must not be owned by or linked to you. Sponsors and their sponsored accounts are not eligible to invite each other for a referral bonus.”

  • The bonus that list is titled after, paid to the new customer$10
  • The payment its third bullet asks you to send to someone else$5

Both figures sit in the block quoted above, read July 27, 2026. The smaller one leaves your account; it does not go to Cash App.

Why almost everyone gets this wrong

Ask any search engine where your Cash App invitation bonus is, and you land on Cash App’s help article, whose title is the question everyone types. Here is what it says, complete:

“For both parties to claim their referral bonuses, your invited friend must complete the steps below.”

For Individual accounts
1. Get the app
2. Enter your referral code into their profile

Four numbered steps, one dollar figure, and no bonus amount anywhere.

A reader lands on Cash App’s own help page, finds exactly one number, and reasonably concludes it is the answer. Coupon sites copy each other from there. The $10 sits in the Affiliate Disclosures, a legal document not linked from the help article. The family-account version of the help page repeats the pattern: five steps, still no bonus amount.

How we know the $10 is current

The $10 appears in two separately dated Cash App documents, in a block carrying the same heading in both: “Cash App Referral Bonus – Terms & Conditions”.

  • The Affiliate Disclosures. The page states Effective: April 16, 2026 and Last Updated: April 17, 2026.
  • The Podcast Disclosures. A different document, for a different purpose, stating Last Updated: April 21, 2026.

The referral block in the second is word for word identical to the first: same $10, same 14 days, same 30-day payout.

What this does and does not prove. Two company documents agreeing is still what Cash App says about Cash App, and a company can change an offer the day after we read it. Check the live page before you build plans around it.

Cash App’s full Terms of Service contains exactly one referral clause:

Quoted from Cash App

“13. Referral Programs
From time to time, we may offer referral programs or incentives for inviting others to use the Service (a “Referral Program”). Any bonuses or incentives under such Referral Program shall be subject to the then current Referral Program terms, if applicable, and otherwise at our sole discretion.”

The Terms of Service fixes no amount and points at whatever the promotion terms say at the time.

What the $10 actually costs you to collect

Three published requirements stand between a new account and the bonus.

1. Enter the referral code

The terms say to Download Cash App and enter the referral code, and add: Referral codes are one time use. That could mean each code works once ever, or that each person may use a code once. Cash App does not say which, so do not build a plan that depends on either reading.

2. Link a new debit card or bank account, and keep it linked

The full requirement is Link a new debit card or bank account to your Cash App account, and keep a debit card or bank account linked until the referral bonus is paid. The condition stays live until the money arrives. Unlinking a card in week two, after doing everything else correctly, is a self-inflicted wound.

For teenagers, the same bullet offers an alternative: If you’re within ages 13-17, you can also order and activate a Cash App Card (with a parent or guardian as your sponsor).

3. Send $5 to another Cash App account within 14 days

The wording is precise about where the money goes: Send $5 to another Cash App account within 14 days of entering the referral code. The recipient account must not be owned by or linked to you. So a transfer between your own accounts does not count, and neither does a payment to an account linked to yours. The same bullet closes a related door: Sponsors and their sponsored accounts are not eligible to invite each other for a referral bonus.

The $5 is not a fee. It goes to another person, not to Cash App, and the terms are explicit that it must. It is your money changing hands, not money spent on a purchase, so the deal is $10 for a signup, a card link, and one payment you were free to make to anybody.

Who gets what

What Cash App publishes: the $10, addressed to the new user. The sentence is To receive the $10 referral bonus, you must: Download Cash App and enter the referral code. Downloading the app is something the new customer does. The figure belongs to the person accepting the invitation.

What Cash App confirms but does not quantify: that the referrer gets something. The help page opens with For both parties to claim their referral bonuses, your invited friend must complete the steps below. There is a referrer-side bonus, and it depends on the new user finishing the steps.

What Cash App does not publish anywhere we could find: how much the referrer receives. No figure appears in any document we read; the Terms of Service points at whatever the program terms say and names nothing. Referral programs frequently pay the two sides different amounts, so we do not assume symmetry.

When it arrives

Cash App gives itself a month:

Quoted from Cash App

“Referral Bonus Payment: Eligible referral bonuses will be paid out within 30 days after all requirements are completed.”
Cash App Affiliate Disclosures read July 27, 2026

Within is a ceiling, not a schedule. And after all requirements are completed sets the start of the clock at your last action, not at signup: a $5 sent on day thirteen pushes the outside date back by nearly two weeks. If you want the money quickly, do all three steps in one sitting.

The eligibility line sits in the same block and rules out several situations before they start:

Quoted from Cash App

“Eligibility: Offer valid for new Cash App customers in the U.S. only. Limit one referral bonus per person. Users ages 13-17 must have a parent or legal guardian sponsor their account.”
Cash App Affiliate Disclosures read July 27, 2026

The help page adds a further exclusion for sponsors: If you’re already a Sponsor, you cannot receive a bonus from an account you’ve already authorized. Cash App also notes: Visa, Sutton Bank and The Bancorp Bank, N.A. are not sponsors of this promotion and are in no way responsible for the administration of the promotion or the fulfillment of discounts.

Is $10 actually worth it?

If you were going to use Cash App anyway, take it. The work is downloading an app you wanted, linking a card you were going to link, and sending five dollars to a person you know. Do the three steps in a single sitting, keep the card linked, and wait out the thirty days.

If you were not going to use Cash App, ten dollars is a bad reason to start. The requirement is linking a debit card or bank account to a payments app and keeping it linked until Cash App decides to pay. That is a real, if small, expansion of where your banking details live. Nobody should attach a bank account to an app they do not want because a bonus exists.

If you are curious and the bonus is the nudge, decide whether you want the app first, then collect the $10 for having decided.
