Cash App deep dive

The Cash App bonus did not land. Here is which rule caught you.

Terms examined Jul 27, 2026 8 min read Paid within 30 days

Cash App publishes a short list of conditions, each a single sentence precise enough to hold your own situation against. The problem is that they sit in two documents, and the one people find does not contain them. Below is each condition with the sentence that creates it.

The clock, end to end

The day you enter the referral code The clock starts here. The deadline attaches to the code, not to the day you installed the app or opened your account.
Within 14 days of entering the code Send $5 to another Cash App account. Not one owned by or linked to you, and not one you sponsor. Past 14 days, support cannot reverse it
Until the referral bonus is paid Keep a debit card or bank account linked. The condition is to keep one linked, not merely to link one.
Within 30 days after all requirements are completed Cash App pays. The thirty days runs from the last step you completed, not from signup or the code.

Every date here comes from Cash App’s Affiliate Disclosures, read July 27, 2026.

Which one caught you, and what to do

The ruleWhere that leaves you
1. The clock starts at the code, not at signupThe most common misread
2. The $5 has to go to a real other personNot fixable after the fact
3. The card has to stay linked, not just get linkedQuietly brutal, and often reversible
4. You may simply be too earlyNothing is wrong, wait
5. New customers only, one per personEligibility, not timing
6. Family accounts have an extra stepOne more box to tick
7. “Referral codes are one time use”Genuinely undefined

The most common misread 1. The clock starts at the code, not at signup

This accounts for more failed Cash App referrals than everything else on this page combined. Cash App's Affiliate Disclosures require:

“Send $5 to another Cash App account within 14 days of entering the referral code.”

Cash App, Cash App Affiliate Disclosures, read July 27, 2026

The deadline attaches to the code, not to the day you installed the app or opened your account. Somebody who downloads Cash App, ignores it for three weeks, then types in a code and sends $5 the next morning is inside the window. Somebody who enters the code on day one and pays the $5 five weeks later has missed it by three weeks, with nothing visibly expiring to say so. The help page states the step the same way, in its Individual accounts list: Send $5 within 14 days of using the referral code.

What to do: count the days between the date you entered the code and the date the $5 left your account. If it is more than 14, this is your answer, and support cannot reverse it.

Not fixable after the fact 2. The $5 has to go to a real other person

Keeping the $5 inside the family is what the terms block. The same sentence continues:

“The recipient account must not be owned by or linked to you.”

Cash App, Cash App Affiliate Disclosures, read July 27, 2026

Sending $5 to your own second account does nothing, and neither does sending it to an account linked to yours, which is the wording that catches sponsor arrangements. The next sentence is explicit:

“Sponsors and their sponsored accounts are not eligible to invite each other for a referral bonus.”

Cash App, Cash App Affiliate Disclosures, read July 27, 2026

The help page carries the matching restriction aimed at the adult in the arrangement:

“If you’re already a Sponsor, you cannot receive a bonus from an account you’ve already authorized.”

Cash App, Where’s My Invitation Bonus?, read July 27, 2026

So a parent who sponsors a teenager's account cannot refer that teenager, and the teenager cannot refer the parent.

What to do: if the $5 went to yourself or to an account you sponsor, there is no recovery path on that attempt. If you have not yet sent it, send it to somebody unconnected to you.

Quietly brutal, and often reversible 3. The card has to stay linked, not just get linked

The condition least often noticed, and the one most likely to explain a bonus that felt earned and never arrived. Cash App does not merely require you to link a payment method:

“Link a new debit card or bank account to your Cash App account, and keep a debit card or bank account linked until the referral bonus is paid. If you’re within ages 13-17, you can also order and activate a Cash App Card (with a parent or guardian as your sponsor).”

Cash App, Cash App Affiliate Disclosures, read July 27, 2026

Two words carry the weight: keep and until. Bonuses are paid within 30 days after all requirements are completed, so the window during which you must keep a card linked can be up to a month after you finished everything.

This is the combination that catches people. You link a card, enter the code, send the $5, and consider the job done. A week later you swap banks or tidy up the account you only linked in order to qualify. On Cash App's published wording you are no longer meeting the condition, and you are still inside the payment window.

Note that the second half is not tied to the specific card from the first: you link a new card or bank account, then keep a card or bank account linked. Read literally, replacing one linked card with another keeps the condition satisfied; removing your last one does not.

What to do: if you have unlinked everything and are still inside the thirty days, relink a card now. If you unlinked and the window then closed, say so when you write to support; their records will show it either way.

Nothing is wrong, wait 4. You may simply be too early

Before you spend an hour on a support chat, check the calendar. Cash App gives itself a month:

“Referral Bonus Payment: Eligible referral bonuses will be paid out within 30 days after all requirements are completed.”

Cash App, Cash App Affiliate Disclosures, read July 27, 2026

The clock hangs on after all requirements are completed, not on signup or the code. If the last thing you did was send the $5 on the tenth, the thirty days begins then. If it was linking a card two days later, it begins later still.

What to do: write down the date you completed the final step and add thirty days. Until that date arrives you have no complaint an agent can act on.

Eligibility, not timing 5. New customers only, one per person

Some readers were never in scope. The eligibility line does three jobs at once:

“Eligibility: Offer valid for new Cash App customers in the U.S. only. Limit one referral bonus per person. Users ages 13-17 must have a parent or legal guardian sponsor their account.”

Cash App, Cash App Affiliate Disclosures, read July 27, 2026

Three gates. New customers, so an account you opened years ago and then re-entered a code into is not what this offer was written for. In the U.S. only. And one referral bonus per person, a limit on the human being and not on the account, so opening a second account does not answer it.

What to do: if you have collected a Cash App referral bonus before, or your account is not new, that is very likely the whole explanation.

One more box to tick 6. Family accounts have an extra step

Cash App publishes two qualifying lists. For most people it is four items:

For Individual accounts
1. Get the app
2. Enter your referral code into their profile
3. Link a debit card
4. Send $5 within 14 days of using the referral code”

Cash App, Where’s My Invitation Bonus?, read July 27, 2026

For a teenager it is five, and the extra one sits in the middle:

For Family accounts for ages 13+
1. Get the app
2. Enter your referral code into their profile
3. Send a request to an eligible parent or guardian for approval
4. Order and activate a physical Cash Card or link a debit card
5. Send $5 within 14 days of using the referral code”

Cash App, Where’s My Invitation Bonus?, read July 27, 2026

Step three is the addition, and the 14-day clock on step five runs whether or not the approval request sitting on an adult's phone has been answered. Step four differs too: family accounts get a choice, Order and activate a physical Cash Card or link a debit card. A physical card adds shipping time and an activation step, both of which eat into a two-week window that started when the code was entered.

What to do: confirm the guardian approval went through, and do not let a physical card in the post become the reason the $5 lands on day sixteen.

Genuinely undefined 7. “Referral codes are one time use”

Inside the list of things you must do, Cash App drops a five-word rule with no explanation:

“Download Cash App and enter the referral code. Referral codes are one time use”

Cash App, Cash App Affiliate Disclosures, read July 27, 2026

That sentence has two plausible readings and Cash App does not say which is correct anywhere we could find. It could mean one use per code, ever, on which reading a code posted publicly is consumed by whoever gets to it first. It could equally mean one use per person, that is, you get one shot at entering a code and cannot swap it later. Picking one would be inventing a rule on Cash App's behalf.

What to do, and this works under either reading: get your code directly from the person referring you, at the moment you are about to use it, not copied off a website. If codes are single-use, a fresh code from a real person is the only kind that can still be live. If the limit is one attempt per person, that single attempt should count.

Where the rules actually live

Search for a missing Cash App bonus and you land on a help page titled Where’s My Invitation Bonus?. It publishes no bonus amount at all. The only figure on it is the $5 you send. It carries no eligibility section, no new-customer statement, no one-per-person limit, no requirement to keep a card linked, and no payment deadline.

All of that sits in the Cash App Affiliate Disclosures, under a heading called Cash App Referral Bonus – Terms & Conditions, stated as Effective: April 16, 2026 and Last Updated: April 17, 2026. Nothing about its name suggests it is where the answer is. The identical terms block is reproduced word for word in the Cash App Podcast Disclosures, stated as Last Updated: April 21, 2026, which is why we quote it with confidence.

The amount, since the help page will not tell you: the Affiliate Disclosures open the requirement list with To receive the $10 referral bonus, you must:, addressed to the new user. For why $5 is quoted everywhere online when the terms name $10, see how much is the Cash App referral bonus.

Cash App's Terms of Service contain exactly one referral clause, section 13, and it is a pointer:

“From time to time, we may offer referral programs or incentives for inviting others to use the Service (a ‘Referral Program’). Any bonuses or incentives under such Referral Program shall be subject to the then current Referral Program terms, if applicable, and otherwise at our sole discretion.”

Cash App, Cash App Terms of Service, read July 27, 2026

So the Terms of Service hand authority to the then current Referral Program terms, which is the Affiliate Disclosures page. We searched them for any restriction on where a referral code may be posted and found none. That is we checked and found none, which is not the same claim as there being none.

One more line, worth knowing if a bank or card network comes up in a support conversation:

“Visa, Sutton Bank and The Bancorp Bank, N.A. are not sponsors of this promotion and are in no way responsible for the administration of the promotion or the fulfillment of discounts.”

What Cash App does not publish

Two gaps. Nowhere does Cash App put a number on what the inviter receives, and we are not going to supply one. And the one time use question above stays unresolved.

How to write a ticket that gets resolved

Support can correct records. It cannot waive published conditions. So lead with dates.

Nearly every condition here is a date Cash App can look up. Send one message containing:

  • The date you entered the referral code, and the date you sent the $5. Side by side, those verify the 14-day condition without an agent asking anything.
  • Who you sent it to, enough to establish it was not an account you own or sponsor.
  • Whether a card or bank account has been linked continuously since, with dates if you unlinked and relinked.
  • The date you completed the last remaining step, and therefore the date the thirty days runs to.
  • Which published conditions you believe you met, in one sentence.

On a Family account, add the date guardian approval was granted and the date any physical Cash Card was activated.

Missing-bonus FAQ

Does the 14 days run from signup?

No. The condition is to Send $5 to another Cash App account within 14 days of entering the referral code.

Can I send the $5 to my own other account?

No. The recipient account must not be owned by or linked to you. Sponsor pairs are excluded too.

I unlinked my card. Does that matter?

It may. Cash App asks you to keep a debit card or bank account linked until the referral bonus is paid.

How long should I wait before complaining?

Thirty days from the day you completed the final step. Bonuses are paid out within 30 days after all requirements are completed.

Can a code be used more than once?

Cash App says Referral codes are one time use and does not define what that means. Get a fresh code from the person referring you.

Why does the help page not show an amount?

The only figure on Where’s My Invitation Bonus? is the $5 you send. The $10 and the eligibility rules live in the Affiliate Disclosures.
