DoorDash DoorDash deep dive Examined Jul 27, 2026 No figure published anywhere

Nobody can tell you what a DoorDash referral is worth, and that includes DoorDash.

Worth it ifa first DoorDash order was happening anyway. The credit is real, it is documented, and it lasts six months. What does not exist is a number anyone can quote you beforehand, because DoorDash has kept the figure out of every document it publishes and put it inside a private account screen instead.
DoorDash will not sayand the refusal is the most reliable fact on this page. The governing document is the Consumer Referral Program Terms and Conditions, which carry the line "Last updated: May 1, 2023"

From that last-updated line to its final sentence, the document runs 887 words and contains no dollar sign at all, and no percentage. Every numeral in the whole thing is a list marker, a cap or a date: 1, 2, 5, 10, and the year 2023. That count comes from reading it in full on July 27, 2026. For a document whose entire subject is giving people money, that is a remarkable omission, and it is not carelessness.

The sentence that does all the work

The Consumer Referral Program Terms give exactly one direct answer to "how much", and it is an answer about the absence of an answer. Under the Referrers heading: "The amount of Referral Credit that can be received for each Qualified Referral varies and may also vary over time, and will be stated in the Referrer's DoorDash account (in the area where the Referrer can access the Referral Link)."

On the new user's side: "A New User who registers on the DoorDash platform using a Referral Link will be eligible for the offer stated in the Referral Link." And in the list of qualifying conditions, the new user must meet "the offer requirements set forth in the Referral Link".

Two sides of the deal, two amounts, two different hiding places. Neither document ever says what either one is, what the qualifying minimum order is, or whether the credit arrives whole or in pieces.

We counted both documents

The second document, the Terms And Conditions For Promotional Offers And Credits, governs your credit once it lands, and it is full of money.

  • Dollar signs in the 887-word Consumer Referral Program TermsNone
  • Dollar signs in the promotional offers and credits terms16

Counted by hand in both documents on July 27, 2026. The sixteen carry six distinct figures; the empty track is a count of zero, not a gap in our reading.

DoorDash will publish a one-cent fee, but not this

DoorDash is otherwise comfortable printing exact amounts in the very same document, sometimes to the penny. Three examples from the promotional terms, all quoted verbatim, none of them your referral:

  • "Orders containing alcohol that qualify for a free delivery promotion will be charged a $0.01 Alcohol Service Fee per delivery."
  • "AFTER DASHPASS TRIAL PERIOD ENDS, CUSTOMER WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE CHARGED $9.99/MONTH, PLUS ANY APPLICABLE FEES."
  • "Offer valid only on orders with a minimum subtotals greater than $10, excluding taxes and fees." That is the minimum on a free-delivery offer for new customers, not the referral minimum.

DoorDash publishes a number when the number is a charge, a limit or a fixed promotion, and withholds it when the number is a discretionary payment to you.

The shelf where the referral is not

DoorDash's consumer help centre has a whole category called Promotions. On the day we looked it listed 58 articles. Forty-one of them have a digit in the URL itself. Not one of the 58 is the referral programme, and the word does not appear in a single slug.

Take one as the control. The article titled "12 orders in 90 days = $25 reward" opens: "Place at least twelve (12) orders on the DoorDash platform within the 90-day period specified in the DoorDash platform (“Qualifying Period”) to receive $25 off your next order." Precise trigger, precise amount, precise window, published openly. When it comes to the referral, the same company writes 887 words that never reach a figure.

The minimum order is missing too

The referral terms say a qualified referral requires that the new user "meets the offer requirements set forth in the Referral Link, which typically includes placing an order on the DoorDash platform with a certain minimum subtotal (excluding taxes and fees)". No figure follows. The ten dollar threshold quoted above belongs to the New User First Month Unlimited free delivery offer, a different promotion with its own thirty-day window and its own list of excluded states.

The referral minimum is whatever your own link says, checked on your own screen, before you build a cart.

Where the figures you have seen elsewhere come from

Search this question and you will be given confident amounts within seconds. Every one we traced comes from one of four places, and none of them is DoorDash making you a promise.

One person's account screenReal, and real for exactly one person on one day
A coupon aggregator's house estimateUnsourced, and updated by nobody
An unrelated DoorDash promotionA published figure, for a different offer
An older screenshot passed alongThe terms permit the amount to change over time

"Varies and may also vary over time" means a figure that was accurate when somebody screenshotted it can be wrong now without DoorDash changing a single published word. A number with no document behind it cannot go out of date, which is precisely why it never stops circulating.

Uber Eats does exactly the same thing

This is not a DoorDash quirk. Our page on how much the Uber Eats referral is worth reports about 2,300 words of referral rules containing no currency symbol at all, with Uber pushing the amount into what it calls the Specific Reward Terms, meaning the invitation and the app. Grubhub makes it three: its referral terms describe the reward without ever stating it. Uber personalises by city and puts a sixty-day fuse on the reward; DoorDash personalises by account and gives six months. The conditions are public, the consideration is private.

Who publishes an amountNeither DoorDash nor Uber Eats
DoorDash hides it inThe referrer's account, and the link
Uber hides it inThe invitation and the app
DoorDash credit expiry"Credit expires 6 months from the date of issue"
Uber reward expiry60 days from the invitee activating the offer
Referrer cap, DoorDash10 in the US and Canada, 5 in Australia and New Zealand

Instacart is the exception: it publishes a ceiling on its referral and tells you how it splits.

Why a company refuses to publish its own number

Three ordinary commercial reasons are stacked here. A referral is a growth budget, and writing the amount into a legal document would mean amending it every time the dial moves, which is why these terms have not been touched since May 2023 while the Promotions shelf next door churns weekly. A published number is a promise and an unpublished one is not, and the offer is not even confirmed until the last screen. And a variable amount can be adjusted and tested quietly, where a published figure becomes an anchor.

What DoorDash will commit to, in writing

The documents are silent on value and unusually precise about everything that can take value away from you. Every row here is quoted or directly paraphrased from the two terms pages linked on this page.

Credit expiry"Credit expires 6 months from the date of issue"
What it applies to"applied toward order subtotals (excluding gratuity and alcohol purchases)"
Stacking"Credits may not be applied with any other Offer"
Cash value"Offers cannot be redeemed for cash or cash equivalent"
Transfer or resale"not transferable and may not be auctioned, traded, copied, transferred, bartered, modified or sold"
Past orders"Offers cannot be applied retroactively for prior purchases"
Promo code with no stated dateExpires 30 days after it was sent, or after it was last displayed
Referrer cap10 qualified referrals in the US or Canada, 5 in Australia or New Zealand
Eligibility decided"at checkout"
DoorDash may end it"at any time and in any manner without notice to you"

The promotional offers and credits document still carries the line "©2018 DoorDash, Inc. All Rights Reserved."

Do this, in this order

  1. Get the link from a person, not from a search result. The terms require the referrer to provide it "directly to the New User through email, text, or the Share Your Link option", and allow DoorDash to withhold or revoke the credit if the referrer "posted the Referral Link on a publicly accessible website such as, but not limited to, Google, Craigslist, Twitter, and RetailMeNot". A scraped link can cost the referrer their credit and buys you nothing.
  2. Have the referrer read their own number to you before either of you starts. The figure exists only in the area of their DoorDash account where the referral link lives. Ask whether it names a minimum order, and take a screenshot: it is the only evidence either of you will have if the credit does not arrive.
  3. Audit your own history before anyone builds a cart. The promotional terms disqualify new-customer offers "if DoorDash has a record of their name, email, phone number, or credit card having being used for a prior DoorDash order or being linked to an existing active or inactive DoorDash account". Inactive counts, and the credit can be pulled from the referrer too if the new user "has previously created a DoorDash account, even if such other account was created using a different email address, phone number, or other information".
  4. Expect the verdict at the final screen. "Final eligibility for the New User's offer will be determined at checkout." Confirm the discount has actually applied before you place the order.
  5. Judge the number against the whole bill, not the subtotal. Credit is "applied toward order subtotals (excluding gratuity and alcohol purchases)", and promo codes "cannot be applied towards taxes or fees other than delivery fees (including but not limited to service fees, small order fees, and surge fees)". The tip, the taxes and most of the fees sit outside whatever figure you are shown.
  6. Spend it inside six months and do not plan on stacking. Credit expires six months from issue, cannot be combined with another offer, cannot be applied to an order you already placed, and has no cash value.
Every button below pays us nothing: we hold no DoorDash referral link, so all four links go to DoorDash's own help pages with no tracking attached. Other guides on this site do carry our referral links, and this strip above the buttons is where each of them says so.

Is it worth your time?

Yes, on one condition: that a first DoorDash order was going to happen anyway. Accepting a friend's link costs you nothing, and an unquotable discount is still a discount. What it cannot be is a reason to choose DoorDash over a competitor, because you would be comparing a known price against an unknown one. The offer is real, the mechanics are well documented, and the value is not documented at all. The rest, both sides of the programme and the full trap list, sits in our DoorDash guide.

Frequently asked

So how much is the DoorDash referral, really?

Unknowable in advance, by design. DoorDash states only that the amount "varies and may also vary over time, and will be stated in the Referrer's DoorDash account".

Is there any dollar figure in the referral terms at all?

No. We counted on July 27, 2026: 887 words of body text, no dollar sign, no percentage, and the only numerals in the document are 1, 2, 5, 10 and the year 2023.

How much does the new user get?

Also unpublished. The new user is eligible for "the offer stated in the Referral Link", so that number lives inside the link. Open it and read it before you order.

What is the minimum order?

The terms say only that qualifying "typically includes placing an order on the DoorDash platform with a certain minimum subtotal (excluding taxes and fees)". No figure is given. The ten dollar minimum you may have seen belongs to a separate free-delivery promotion, not to the referral.

Why do other sites quote a number?

Because they are repeating one person's personalised screen, an aggregator's guess, or a figure borrowed from one of the dozens of unrelated DoorDash promotions that do publish exact amounts. None of those is a commitment to you, and none of them is checkable against a DoorDash page.

Does the credit ever expire?

Yes. "Credit expires 6 months from the date of issue." A promo code with no stated expiry defaults to thirty days from when it was sent or last displayed, which is a much shorter fuse on a different instrument.

Can DoorDash change the amount after I share my link?

The terms allow it. The amount "may also vary over time", and DoorDash reserves the right to "modify or terminate the Referral Program at any time and in any manner without notice to you, in whole or in part". Check your account rather than your memory.
