Chime deep dive

How much is the Chime referral bonus? Two answers, and only one has a number.

Terms examined Jul 27, 2026 5 min read Referrer amount unpublished
$100 what your friend gets, once three conditions are met. Chime prints no figure at all for your side.

That asymmetry makes one popular sentence about this programme, “$100 each side”, simply untrue as a description of what Chime has written down.

What Chime actually publishes

Friend’s referral bonus$100
Referrer’s referral bonusNot stated
Deposit needed to unlock it$200 or more, one deposit
Annual referral limit10 per calendar year

Only two currency figures appear on Chime’s referral page: the $200 deposit requirement and the $100 paid to the friend. There is no third number.

The one sentence that carries the whole reward

Quoted from Chime

“Once all three steps are complete, your friend receives $100, and you earn a bonus. Your bonus amount may vary based on your active offer when your friend signs up.”

The three steps the $100 depends on

  1. Your friend signs up for a Chime Checking Account through your referral link.
  2. They land one deposit of $200 or more within 45 days of opening the account.
  3. They activate the physical card within 14 calendar days of that deposit.

Neither of you is paid at sign-up. Both bonuses wait on your friend finishing those steps, on their schedule, and only accounts opened through your link count.

The number Chime won’t print, on purpose

Quoted from Chime

“Your referral bonus amount can vary based on factors like how long you have been a Chime member, how you use Chime features, and the time of year. The bonus amount you receive for each referred friend is determined at the moment they enroll – not when you send the invite or when you receive the payment. This means different friends you refer to may have different bonus amounts associated with them, depending on when they signed up.”

Where your real number actually lives

Quoted from Chime

“To see how many friends you have successfully referred and the bonus status for each, go to Profile > Invite friends in the Chime app. Your referral progress tracker shows the current status and bonus amount for every person you have invited.”

Open Profile > Invite friends and read the tracker; check again after your friend enrolls, since that is when the amount was set.

Quoted from Chime

“Chime also runs limited-time referral promotions from time to time – you’ll hear about those by email or through an in-app notification.”

That explains many of the different amounts people report.

The annual cap

Quoted from Chime

“Annual limit: You can earn referral rewards for up to 10 successful referrals per calendar year. Once you reach that limit, additional referrals in the same year will not generate a bonus for you.”
Refer a friend to Chime read July 27, 2026

The limit runs on the calendar year, not a rolling twelve months, so December-January invitations straddle two allowances. Nothing we read promises a warning as you approach ten. We publish no annual maximum: ten times an unpublished, varying amount is still unpublished.

Two windows the $100 has to clear

Within 45 days of account opening One qualifying direct deposit of $200 or more has to land, in a single deposit. Two smaller deposits do not add up. Miss the window and the $100 does not arrive
Within 14 calendar days of that deposit The physical card has to be activated. A card sitting unopened sinks the whole bonus

As published by Chime in its referral program terms, read July 27, 2026.

Sequence matters. Line the payroll change up first, then open the account, then wait for the card, or you spend part of the 45 days on nothing.

And it has to be the right kind of money

Chime’s exclusion list is long; the gig-economy line catches the most people:

Quoted from Chime

“These transactions are not qualifying direct deposits:
Bank ACH transfers
Pay Anyone transfers
Verification or trial deposits from banks
Transfers from third-party apps like PayPal, Venmo, or Cash App
Mobile check deposits
Cash deposits
One-time deposits, including tax refunds
On-demand payouts from gig platforms (like Uber Instant Pay or DoorDash Fast Pay) typically arrive within minutes, not on a scheduled payout”

Cashing out through Uber Instant Pay or DoorDash Fast Pay does not count. A recurring scheduled payout from the same platform does. More: what to do when the bonus is not paid and whether your deposit counts for Chime.

Three things Chime does not publish. How long the payout takes, which account it lands in, and whether any clawback applies. We found none stated, which is not the same as none existing.

Is it worth it? Two different answers

For the friendYes. $100 for routing one paycheck, if you were open to switching anyway.
For the referrerUnpriced. No published figure, so there is nothing to weigh it against.

If you are the friend, hit the three steps and treat the $100 as real. If you are the referrer, read the number in Profile > Invite friends. Both sides in full: our Chime guide.
