The bar is $10 of cash back earned, and cash back is the commission a store pays TopCashback for sending you, which TopCashback then passes on. Having spent $10 does nothing at all. Those are wildly different numbers: a store paying a small percentage means many times $10 has to go through the door before the counter reaches ten dollars of actual earnings, and it only counts once the store has confirmed the sale.

The public Tell-a-Friend page prints no figure for what lands on your side. The detail is on TopCashback's Refer a Friend terms page, still marked “Last updated: 08/15/2026”. Read on September 30, 2026, its current promotion says “the new member must earn a minimum of $10 in eligible Cash Back from qualifying retailers within 365 days of joining.” It states no amount for the new member, and no end date.
Until September 28, 2026. When we read the same terms page on September 25, 2026, the promotion then running covered people who joined between September 15 and September 28, 2026. It gave the new member 180 days from joining to earn the $10. That promotion has ended; on September 30 the terms showed the $10 promotion above in its place.
Do this, in this order
- Get the link from a person, not a page. Worth knowing before you accept: TopCashback says whoever's link you used may be able to see whether you have reached the cash back threshold, along with the date you signed up and your username.
- Fix the right number in your head: $10 earned. Not $10 spent. Plan your shopping around the rate a store is actually paying that week, because a low rate on a big purchase can still leave the counter short.
- Expect “pending” to last a while. Pending means TopCashback has seen the click and the sale but the retailer has not confirmed and paid yet. That confirmation can take weeks and sometimes months, and if a retailer never pays a manual claim, TopCashback reserves the right to close the enquiry after six months.
- You have 365 days, not forever. The current terms give the new member 365 days from joining to earn the $10, up from 180 days under the promotion that ended September 28, 2026, and add that “The referral bonus amount and qualifying time period are subject to change.” The window that applies is the one in force on the day you join.
- Check exclusions before you count on a purchase. The Refer a Friend terms publish the list of retailers whose cash back does not count toward the $10. On September 25, 2026 it included NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark and other VPNs, Booking.com, IHG Hotels, Skyscanner, McAfee and dozens of freebie offers. The terms also rule out “Additional sign-up bonuses”, “Bonus promotions” and “New member deals”, so the quick new-member freebies do not move the counter.
- Log in at least once every six months, then cash out whenever you like. TopCashback does not require you to buy anything, but it does require a login every six months, and quiet accounts can be terminated as dormant. On the good side there is genuinely no minimum payout: you can request money as soon as any of it is payable, by bank transfer, PayPal, Venmo or gift card, and some gift cards carry a bonus of up to 5%. Bank transfers by ACH are for US account holders, and there is a short cooling-off period before you can request the next payment.
Is it worth your time?
TopCashback as a cash back site has a real advantage worth naming: no minimum payout, so small amounts never get stranded below a payout threshold. The referral is a harder call, because your own side is not written down, not even in the Refer a Friend terms, and the trigger is $10 of confirmed earnings that may take months to confirm. Join if you shop online enough to make cash back worth having on its own terms, and treat any referral figure you see quoted elsewhere as unverified. If you want a bonus with a published number, Rakuten currently pays $50 while its promo runs.
