The help centre says the company is "currently offering bonus referral incentives to a limited number of users," and adds: "If you do not see a referral option on your account, please check back at a later time." The $80 and $40 figures floating around deal blogs are reports of targeted offers other people were shown. They are not a rate.

That last row is worth a second look. There is "no limit on how many friends you can invite," but there is "a limit to the total amount of Shopping Rewards an account can earn in referral bonuses," and when you reach it your "bonus for a subsequent successful referral may be reduced." Your friend still gets their full value. You are the one who gets quietly downgraded, with no announcement and no published number to watch for.
Do this, in this order
- Look for the referral option before you plan anything around it. This program is targeted. If the tile is not in your account, there is nothing to do but check back later, and no amount of asking support will conjure one.
- Understand what you are asking your friend to install. A browser extension is a small piece of software that lives inside your web browser and can see the shopping pages you visit, which is how it finds coupons and compares prices. Capital One Shopping requires the friend to install the desktop extension or the Safari iOS extension and "enable full permissions."
- Budget 90 days of weekly use, from them, not you. The friend must "regularly use the extension for 90 days," and regular is defined precisely: "use the extension roughly on a weekly basis throughout the duration of their first 90 days." Install it and forget it and the bonus never triggers. Their email must be valid and unique, and they must never have had a Capital One Shopping account before.
- Note the one genuinely friendly rule: nothing has to be bought. Straight from the help centre: "Purchases are not required in order to be eligible to receive a referral bonus." Whatever else is wrong with this offer, it does not push anyone into spending money.
- Then wait another 30 days. The bonus lands "within 30 days after all program requirements have been satisfied," including the friend’s 90 days of regular use. Ninety plus thirty is roughly 120 days from signup to anything appearing. Ordinary shopping rewards are slow too: they "typically post approximately 30 to 90 days after an Eligible Purchase," and travel rewards 60 to 90 days after the trip is over.
- Accept that it will never be money. Shopping Rewards "may never be redeemed for cash or for items of monetary value outside of the Services," and "are not equivalent to money and do not have a cash value." You redeem them for e-gift cards, you need a $5 balance to redeem at all, order confirmation comes within 24 to 72 business hours, the card itself can take up to three business days to issue, and once bought, "gift cards purchased with redeemed Shopping Rewards are nonrefundable."
- Both of you must be in the United States, properly. "The referral program is only available for selected accounts based in the United States," referral links "cannot be used outside the United States," and both sides must be 18 or older. The terms limit the service to "the 50 United States and Washington, D.C.," and the help centre explicitly excludes territories such as Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Reused phone numbers are scrutinised and voice-over-IP numbers are prohibited.
The fine print that can still cost you the bonus
Close the account and the balance goes with it. Any Shopping Rewards balance "will be forfeited upon such termination or cancellation." The rewards themselves do not lapse while the account lives: "unused Shopping Rewards do not expire."
They can be taken back. Capital One Shopping "reserves the right to withhold, cancel, or subtract any pending or prior Rewards" for behaviour it reads as fraudulent, abusive, unethical or suspicious. That judgement is theirs.
The terms carry no effective date. The Capital One Shopping terms of service page shows no last-updated date at all, so there is no way to tell from the page itself when the rules you are agreeing to last changed. The help centre articles are dated, which is how we can tell you the tax figures are current to July 14, 2026.
Running a second shopping extension can void ordinary rewards. Not a referral rule, but it catches people: if another extension claims the purchase, "we can't confirm your purchase or adjust Shopping Rewards afterward." Cancelled orders, subscription renewals, gift cards, in-store and phone orders, shipping, taxes and fees are all excluded from normal shopping rewards too.
Is it worth your time?
The extension itself is a reasonable free tool, and the no-purchase-required rule is genuinely decent. The referral wrapped around it is not something to build a plan on. You cannot see the price before you commit, most accounts are not even offered it, four months pass before anything appears, and what appears is a gift card rather than money. If you already use the extension and a friend asks you for a link, send it and treat whatever arrives as a surprise. Do not talk anyone into installing a permissions-hungry browser extension for a figure you cannot quote to them.
