Examined Sep 18, 2026 Subscription time, not cash Renews unless you cancel

Duolingo publishes no refer-a-friend reward; its one offer to a new customer is a free week of Super Duolingo that charges your account on Day 7 unless you cancel 24 hours before.

Worth it ifyou were already thinking of paying for Super and will cancel in time if the week does not convince you. The lessons are the same on the free tier. The trial takes away the ads and adds Unlimited Hearts, and the pages we saved do not show what Day 7 costs.

1 week freeof Super Duolingo, open to anyone starting a subscription, with no invitation involved

The button on Duolingo's Super page reads “Try 1 week free”, under the line “no commitment. cancel anytime.” The help center lists what Super adds: no ads, Unlimited Hearts, personalized practice of your mistakes, and unlimited attempts at Legendary challenges. It also says Duolingo offers the same lesson content to all users, so the trial changes how the app feels, not what it teaches.

The charge lands on Day 7, and the deadline is a day before it. The Super page's own timeline runs: today, full access; Day 5, a reminder; Day 7, “Your account is charged, cancel anytime 24 hours before”. So the free week is really six days of deciding. Removing the app from your phone does nothing. The cancellation article says: “Deleting the app and/or your account does not cancel your subscription.” The terms add that you must log in and end the subscription even if you have deleted your account.

What pays what

Do this, in this order

  1. Decide whether you need Super at all. The free tier has the same lessons. If ads and running out of Hearts do not bother you, there is nothing here to claim.
  2. Start the trial where you want to manage it. The help center says: “The platform where you initially subscribe is where you'll manage your subscription.” That choice also decides who can refund you. The terms say purchases through the Apple or Google app stores are refunded by Apple or Google, and that Duolingo cannot issue refunds for them. For a subscription bought in a web browser, the refund article lets you email Duolingo support, who will review the request.
  3. Read the price at checkout and write down Day 7. The Super page we saved shows no price for any plan. The terms say Duolingo may revise its pricing at any time, and that a subscription renews for an additional equivalent period after each one ends, until you stop it.
  4. Cancel at least 24 hours before Day 7 if you are not staying. In the app: the Super icon, Settings, Manage subscription, Cancel subscription, then confirm in the App Store or Google Play. On the web: your profile picture, Settings, Super Duolingo, Cancel subscription. If you subscribed through your phone's settings, Apple users follow Apple's instructions and Android users submit a support request.
  5. Do not expect money back for a late cancel. The cancellation article says canceling will not retroactively refund subscription payments, and fees already charged cannot be prorated. After you cancel a paid plan, Super keeps working until the period you paid for runs out.
All payments are nonrefundable and there are no refunds or credits for Virtual Items or partially used membership periods, unless otherwise required by the law in your jurisdiction.

What Duolingo does not publish, and what it offers instead of referrals

No referral program on its own pages. We found no Duolingo page that promises anything to a person who invites a friend, or to the friend. The address duolingo.com/referral returned a 404 on the day we checked. Other websites still describe a reward for inviting people. Nothing on Duolingo's own pages supports that today, and Duolingo has not published a statement either way. Treat any invite reward you read about elsewhere as unconfirmed.

The Family Plan is sharing, not a reward. The Family Plan article lets a family manager share Super with 5 family members or friends, in any location. Nobody is paid for joining or inviting. A person with an active paid subscription cannot be invited until it is canceled and has expired. And: “You also can't resell slots on your Family Plan for cash or other items of monetary value.” Duolingo reserves the right to terminate plans whose slots were resold.

Promo codes come from employers and businesses, not strangers. The terms describe Extended Free Trial Codes, redeemed at duolingo.com/redeem after you pick a plan and enter a card. Existing subscribers cannot use one, and nobody may redeem more than one per calendar year. The promo code article also rules out anyone under 13 years of age. The same 24-hour rule applies, or you become a recurring subscriber. A code bought or passed along online is worthless under the terms: “Reselling or transferring Promotion Codes is strictly prohibited. Any Promotion Codes that have been resold or transferred are null and void.” Codes have no dollar value, and Duolingo may modify, suspend or terminate one at any time for any reason.

Prices, an end date and one loose end on refunds. No saved page shows a price or an end date for the trial. The terms open with the line “Please note that these Terms and Conditions of Service were last revised on September 8th, 2025”. They say Google handles refunds for Google Play purchases, while the refund article sends Android subscribers to Duolingo support. The two do not line up, so an Android subscriber may need to try both.

Is it worth your time?

If you came looking for a referral bonus, there is none to collect, and you can stop here. Nobody's link will get you more than the public trial, because Duolingo publishes no link-based reward at all.

If you are weighing Super, the free week is a fair way to find out whether no ads and Unlimited Hearts change how much you practice. It costs nothing if you cancel at least 24 hours before Day 7, on the platform where you signed up. Miss that and you have bought a full subscription period at a price this page cannot tell you, with no refund under the terms. Set the reminder yourself; do not rely on the Day 5 message.
