Audible's free trial is 30 days with one audiobook, then $8.99 a month, and a credit you have not used expires the moment you cancel.
Audible's trial page puts the terms in one line: “New customers only. Auto-renews at $8.99/mo. after 30 days. Cancel anytime.” We found two other offers beside it. A member's referral link added a $5 reward to the same trial until September 30, 2026. The referral page still showed that offer on October 1, 2026, but its own terms ended it the night before. A banner above everything else reads “Prime Member Exclusive | $0.99/mo for 4 months”, then $8.99 a month. That one is a paid offer, not a free one.
What pays what
| A new customer, signing up on the trial page with no link | 30 days free, then $8.99 a month |
|---|---|
| A new customer of Audible.com who signed up through a member's personal referral link by September 30, 2026 | The same trial with 1 audiobook, plus a $5 reward to spend by October 31, 2026 |
| A new customer signing up through a member's referral link now | The same trial with 1 audiobook. The $5 reward ended September 30, 2026 |
| An Amazon Prime member taking the banner offer | $0.99 a month for 4 months plus a $20 credit, then $8.99 a month |
| A current subscriber who enrolls and spends 3 credits between October 1, 2026 and February 28, 2027 | $15 reward, lost on canceling |
| Canceling with a credit unused | Credit gone |
On price alone, a Prime member who means to stay should compare. Four months at $0.99 is $3.96. The free trial covers the first 30 days only, so the next three monthly charges at $8.99 come to $26.97. On October 1, 2026 the banner also added a $20 Audible credit. On September 25, 2026 we read Amazon’s own Audible page, which said the banner offer would end October 7, 2026. It did not. On October 15, 2026 the banner was still on Audible’s trial page, and Amazon’s page now reads: “Auto-renews at $8.99/mo after 4 months. Offer ends October 19, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT.” The same page says: “Your $20 promotional bonus expires on November 30, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT.” After October 19, check whether the banner is still there before you count on it.
Do this, in this order
- Do not wait for a friend's link. Until September 30, 2026 a member's link added $5 to the trial. On October 1, 2026 the referral page was still headed “Your friend sent you a free month + $5”, but its own terms say: “Eligibility for $5 reward ends September 30, 2026.” The $5 was for new customers of Audible.com, one per customer and Audible account. The trial itself needs no link.
- Pay with a credit card. The Conditions of Use say Audible only accepts credit cards for membership fees, and add: “Please do not sign up for the program with a debit card.” Audible may validate the card with a temporary authorization, and if it finds the card invalid it may revoke any benefits, credits or content from the offer.
- Choose the audiobook in the first days. The clause below decides whether the trial was worth anything.
- Write down day 30, and cancel before it if you do not want to pay. “Trial members may, at any time (through your Account Details), choose not to continue to paid membership by cancelling prior to the end of the trial period.” Customer Service can also cancel by telephone or chat. If you signed up inside the Audible app on iOS or through Google Play, the Conditions of Use point you to separate instructions. Miss the date and the charge stands: “If you cancel your membership or subscription, you will not receive a refund of any fees already paid.”
- If you already earned the $5, spend it by October 31, 2026, on something you pay money for. It applies only to cash purchases of audio products on Audible.com or in the Audible app, not to gift purchases or credit bundles, and in USD only. It cannot be redeemed for cash or moved to another account. The referral page says Standard members buy additional audiobooks for the full price, so this is $5 off one full-price title.
Credits expire immediately upon the cancellation or termination of your membership unless used prior to cancellation or termination.
Where Audible's pages disagree
Whether the book stays yours. The trial page says of the monthly pick: “This is yours to keep.” The referral page, which sells a plan it names Audible Standard at the same $8.99, says: “Monthly audiobook selections are yours to enjoy as long as you're a member.” It adds: “Monthly audiobook selections don't roll over if you miss a month.” The trial page does not name its plan. Read which plan the checkout shows. If it is Standard, the referral page's wording means your pick goes when your membership does.
When the $5 window opened. The referral page's FAQ says sign-ups qualify from May 4, 2026. Its Terms and Conditions, lower on the same page, say from May 26, 2026. Both say the window closed at 11:59 PM PT on September 30, 2026, so the gap no longer matters to anyone signing up now, but the page still gives two start dates for one offer.
What the $15 credit offer is called. Audible's press release of June 2, 2026 lists a credit promotion as “Spend 3 Credits, Get 1 Free”. The offer page we read is titled “Spend 3 credits to earn a $15 reward”. It runs from October 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027, for U.S. members with an active monthly subscription who enroll. Credits received from a promotional offer do not count, the reward expires on March 31, 2027, and canceling before then loses it.
What Audible does not publish
Who counts as a new customer. Audible’s help center lists referral rewards under Audible Rewards, whose terms say a reward expires on the date shown in your account and, on cancellation, “your Rewards and Listening Days will be deleted and voided”. No page defines a new customer; the Conditions of Use leave trial eligibility to Audible's sole discretion. The referral page also says: “Audible reserves the right to modify or cancel the $5 reward offer at any time.”
When credits die. The Conditions of Use (“Last updated: September 10, 2025”) say immediately. Audible’s help article on canceling says Premium members lose unused credits “At the end of your final billing cycle”, and that “Credits received through an App Store membership or a Google Play Store membership do not expire”. Spend the credit first.
Is it worth your time?
For one audiobook you already want, yes. Sign up, choose it early, and decide before day 30 whether $8.99 a month is a price you would pay on purpose. A friend's link added $5 until September 30, 2026; that has ended, so there is no reason to wait for one. If you already earned the $5, it only helps if you buy a second title with money by October 31, 2026.
Think harder if you tend to forget subscriptions. Twelve months at $8.99 is $107.88, the Conditions of Use authorize Audible to keep collecting the fee, without notice to you unless the law requires it, until you cancel, and fees already paid are not refunded. If you plan to cancel, check the plan name first: on the Standard wording the audiobook is yours only as long as you are a member.
