Babbel gives you an extra month free. Two live versions of the rules disagree on how you earn it.
Which rulebook governs a purchase made through a friend’s link is genuinely unsettled. Babbel publishes two live versions of the same document on its own domains, disagreeing about how long your subscription must be, whether there is a minimum spend, and what the sharer is paid. Neither is marked as superseded.

A three-month plan is enough under one document and not under the other. The US Minimum Spend is a floor in dollars, so a heavily discounted six-month purchase can pass the length test and fail the money test. When it fails, both sides lose the reward.
Two documents, one program, different answers
Babbel has published the same numbered clauses twice, with different numbers inside them, at two of its own addresses, and left both up.
The version filed for the US. Clause 2.3 pays only if referred friends "purchase a 6-month or longer subscription against payment of at least the applicable minimum spend amount". Clause 2.4 sets that floor: "The Minimum Spend amount for Friends based in the US is 22.35 USD". Clause 2.5 gives the sharer "a 10 USD gift card for Amazon"; clause 2.6 gives you "an additional month of subscription to Babbel at no cost". The page is headed BABBEL OFFER TERMS EFFECTIVE DATE: Aug 17, 2018.
The version filed for everyone else. Same document, same numbering, different content. Clause 2.3 asks only that friends "purchase a 3-month or longer subscription against payment", with no minimum spend named anywhere. Clause 2.4 gives the sharer "a 10 EUR virtual Mastercard prepaid card from Rybbon". Your free month moves up to clause 2.5. This page carries no effective date at all.
The live offer page shows the non-US text. On an actual share link at share.babbel.com, the terms printed beneath the offer were the three-month, Rybbon version, followed by a separate Talkable Referral Program Terms of Service.
They disagree about how Babbel can change the deal, too. Both versions of clause 1.4 let Babbel amend the terms or end the program at any time. The US version adds two words: "without notice". The non-US version promises to tell you by email and gives you two weeks to object and walk away.
Do this, in this order
- Use the link the day it arrives. These offers expire. A live Babbel share link we opened returned "Bummer. Your offer expired. But no worries. Ask your friend Dave to share it with you again." If the page says expired, ask for a fresh one.
- Assume the stricter rules apply to you. Neither version defers to the other, so plan for the harder one: six months or longer, and at least $22.35 actually paid. That satisfies the three-month version automatically.
- Buy, do not trial. Both versions turn on the friend purchasing "against payment", so a free trial is not the same event, and a one-month plan earns nothing for either side.
- Do not stretch the plan to chase the month. At the floor the US terms allow, six months for $22.35, your free seventh month is worth about $3.73. On a pricier plan it is worth more, but always exactly one month of what you were going to pay anyway.
- If you are the one sharing, check which reward you are promised. In the US it is a $10 Amazon gift card. Elsewhere it is a 10 EUR Rybbon prepaid card, and Babbel sends you to rybbon.net/terms for its rules; that page refused our requests, so the document deciding the euro card’s expiry, fees and coverage is unread.
- Watch the annual cap, and keep your own evidence. Clause 3.1, both versions: an advocate "may not receive more than 50 rewards" within a year. Screenshot the offer page and the terms on the day you buy, because Babbel’s own help centre no longer contains a single article about referrals.

Babbel names the $10 advocate reward. The second figure is ours, not Babbel’s: $22.35, the US minimum spend, divided over the six months that spend has to buy.
The fine print that can still cost you the reward
The reward is time, not money. Clause 3.3, identical in both versions: a reward received by friends "may only be applied to the purchase made as a result of the referral or to later purchases", and "in no case are Rewards redeemable for cash". Cancel and the month has no separate value to hand back.
Babbel can simply decline. Clause 3.2, both versions, reserves the right "to refuse the issue of any Reward to any Friend or Advocate and/or to exclude any Participant at any time in case of any misuse, manipulation of the system or breach of these Terms and Conditions".
Nobody in the chain owns the reward arriving. The Talkable terms sitting alongside Babbel’s state that Talkable "is not liable for any damages you may suffer as a result of participating in the Program, including but not limited to your inability to obtain or redeem any Rewards", and that the program "is subject to modification or termination at any time without notice in our sole discretion". The same document caps Talkable’s total cumulative liability to you at $100.
Tax is not addressed, which is not the same as no tax. We searched both versions of the Babbel terms and the Talkable terms and found no tax clause at all. That is an absence, not a clearance.
Three companies stand behind one button
Babbel is Babbel GmbH of Berlin, Germany, per its own imprint. It writes the offer terms and owns the subscription your free month lands on.
Talkable runs the machinery. Clause 4.2 names it: Babbel "will use a third-party provider Curebit, Inc. dba Talkable", registered in San Francisco, which will collect, process and store both people’s personal data, including name, email address and IP address. Its own terms then step out of the deal: "the Babbel Offer Terms are entered into by and between you and the Merchant and ... Talkable is not a party to the Babbel Offer Terms."
A fourth party pays the sharer. In the US that is Amazon, under its gift card terms. Elsewhere it is Rybbon, issuing a virtual Mastercard prepaid card.
What the $10 actually buys
Babbel’s clause 4.1 promises that personal data "will not be disclosed or sold to any third party without the prior consent of the data subject". Clause 4.2 and the Talkable terms following it are where that consent gets collected.
Your data travels past Babbel. The Talkable terms state that Talkable "will also allow merchants other than the Merchant (the 'Third-Party Merchants') access to the Personal Data of Advocates and Friends", to show both people promotions from those merchants, personalised "in accordance with Advocates' and Friends' sharing or purchase history". The merchants are not named anywhere you can see. The same section says you understand they "may not have appropriate technical and organizational safeguards in place for your Personal Data", may sit in countries the European Commission has found do not provide adequate data protection, and that "your consent to the above is our lawful basis under the GDPR for transferring your Personal Data".
Weigh it honestly. Name, email, IP address and purchase history is not a catastrophic disclosure. But it is the real price of the $10, and you pay it whether or not the card shows up.
Is this program still being looked after?
Babbel’s help centre no longer documents it. We listed every article on Babbel’s support site, all 57 of them. Exactly one title mentions friends, and it is about the Group Plan for family and friends. Not one article body mentions a referral. The article that used to explain the program, at the URL ending 360046073732, now answers with an authentication error instead of content.
The paperwork is eight years old and the plumbing still runs. The terms that carry a date carry August 17, 2018. The legal pages load, the Talkable infrastructure answers, share links generate. Then the one we opened had already expired. Working machinery with no reader-facing documentation is why we call this real but fragile.
Is it worth your time?
If you were buying six months or more of Babbel anyway and a friend has a working link, take it. It is a genuine extra month, and no clawback clause waits to unwind it. If you were not already buying, this should not change your mind: the reward is worth one month of whatever you pay, roughly $3.73 at the cheapest six-month purchase the US terms allow. If you are the one sharing links: the $10 is real, the ceiling is 50 rewards a year, the terms are from 2018, and the price is your name, email, IP address and purchase history reaching merchants nobody has named for you.
