Discover matches all the cash back you earn in your first 365 days, dollar for dollar with no cap, but the money arrives only after year one, and an account closed before then gets none of it.
There is no fixed bonus here and no spend to hit. The card earns 5% on rotating quarterly categories once you activate them, up to a quarterly maximum the page does not state, and 1% on everything else. At the end of your first year Discover adds a second copy of everything you earned: “Get an unlimited dollar-for-dollar match of all the cash back you earn at the end of your first year, automatically. There is no limit to how much we’ll match.” Redeeming during the year does not shrink it. What shrinks it is closing the account, or earning cash back that processes after day 365. Applying through a Discover cardmember’s Refer a Friend link adds a statement credit after a purchase in your first 3 months, of an amount the page does not print.
What pays what
| All cash back earned from approval through the first 365 days | Matched dollar for dollar, no limit |
|---|---|
| Quarterly 5% categories, once activated | 5%, up to a quarterly maximum the page does not print |
| All other purchases | 1% |
| Annual fee | $0 |
| Purchases and balance transfers, first 15 months | 0% intro APR, then 17.74% to 26.74% variable; balance transfer fee applies |
| Applying online through a cardmember’s Refer a Friend link, then a purchase within 3 months | A statement credit, amount not printed |
| Statement credits, or rewards processed after day 365 | Not matched |
| An account that is closed | Not matched |
| An existing Discover cardholder | Not eligible |
Discover will automatically match all the cash back you earn at the end of your first year after you open your new Discover it Cash Back Card.
The same FAQ adds the example: “So if you earn $50 cash back, we’ll give you another $50.” And on the size of the match: “No, there’s no limit to how much we’ll match at the end of your first year.”
Do this, in this order
- Apply from the card page and read the terms it shows you, that day. The rates section says: “The offer terms presented on this page (including, but not limited to, APR rates) may be different than offer terms displayed if you navigate away from this page.” A pre-approval mailer is its own offer too; the page says pre-approved offers may have terms that vary from other offers you see elsewhere.
- Activate the 5% categories every quarter. The page's wording is “Earn 5% cash back on everyday purchases at different places you shop each quarter, up to the quarterly maximum when you activate.” Without activation those purchases earn the ordinary rate, and the match can only double what you earned.
- Count 365 days from approval, and stop counting a week early. The match covers cash back “from the day your new account is approved through your first 365 days”. The footnote adds: “You earn cash back only when transactions are processed, which may be after the transaction date.” A purchase on day 363 that processes on day 366 is outside the match.
- Redeem whenever you like. “Yes, you can redeem cash back any time after you earn it and still receive the full match amount at the end of your first year.” Taking the cash early does not cost you the match; only closing the account does.
- Keep the account open through the payout. Discover adds the match to your rewards account within two billing periods after the year ends. An account that is closed is on the not-matched list, so do not close or replace the card until the match has posted.
Through a friend's link: a statement credit as well
Discover's credit card Refer a Friend page lists Discover it Cash Back among its eligible cards. A new cardholder who applies through a cardmember's personal link gets a statement credit once they make a purchase in the first 3 months. The cardmember's referral offer runs to 11:59 pm ET on December 31, 2026, so apply well before then. A balance transfer or a cash advance does not count as the purchase, and existing Discover cardmembers cannot be referred. The page names no amount.
Each eligible referral will receive a statement credit after making a purchase that is posted to their account within three months of opening a new Discover account.
Apply online through the link itself. The footnote says “Phone, mail-in, and other digital applications are not eligible for referral rewards.” It also says “Offer may not be combined with any other introductory offer.” It does not say whether that touches the Cashback Match, so read the terms the link shows you before you submit. The credit itself will not be doubled, because statement credits are on the not-matched list.
What Discover does not publish, and what has changed
The quarterly maximum. The 5% categories are capped “up to the quarterly maximum when you activate”, and the page never says what that maximum is. Since the match doubles the 5% earnings too, the cap is the single number that most limits the match, and it is not on the page.
An end date. The footnote says “This promotional offer may not be available in the future and is exclusively for new cardholders.” No date is given, and the page carries no last-updated date. The Cardmember Agreement it links to was not part of what we read.
Whose page this is. The footer of the Discover card page reads “© 2026 Capital One”; a notice above it says “You are now on a Capital One webpage”; and the match exclusion names “Discover or Capital One checking or other deposit accounts” as one category. The card is still sold as a Discover card; the company behind the page is Capital One. Our Discover Bank guide found the same on the banking side.
The size of the referral credit. The Refer a Friend page names no amount, and Discover reserves the right “to alter, change or terminate the Referral Program at any time”. The card page itself names no referral link or code. Neither page shows a state exclusion or an age minimum.
Is it worth your time?
Yes, for anyone who wants a no-fee card and will keep it open for a year. There is nothing to qualify for and nothing to time except the activation reminders, and the match cannot be lost by spending too little; it can only be small. Put your everyday spending on it, activate each quarter, and the second copy of your cash back arrives after day 365. If a friend with a Discover card sends you their link, apply through it and make a purchase in the first 3 months for a statement credit on top.
The people it suits least are those who want a bonus with a number on it, fast. The Venture page below prints 75,000 miles for a spend inside three months; this card pays whatever you earned, a year later. And if you might close or replace the card inside twelve months, the match is the first thing you would lose.
