Costco deep diveCostco has no holiday return deadline because it has no return deadline. Except for the list that matters most at Christmas.
Costco’s guarantee has no stated day count, so it needs no seasonal extension. What holiday shoppers actually need is the list of what runs on 90 days, quoted below in full.
Here is Costco’s entire published rule for general merchandise:
Quoted from Costco
“On Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, and will refund your purchase price*, with the following exceptions:”
No number of days appears anywhere in it. Not 90, not 365, nothing. A gift bought in
October is under the same open-ended guarantee in January, which is why Costco publishes no
holiday extension: for most items there is no window to extend. As of August 29, 2026, a
search of the page for holiday, Christmas and December matches nothing but a footer link to
store hours. The asterisk is worth knowing about too: it resolves to
Limitations apply. See the membership counter or Costco.com for details
, so the
guarantee’s outer limits live off the page that states it.
The exception that decides Christmas: the 90-day list
Quoted from Costco
“Electronics: Costco will accept returns within 90 days (from the date the member received the merchandise) for Televisions, Projectors, Major Appliances (refrigerators above 10 cu. ft., freezers, ranges, cooktops, over-the-range and under-counter microwaves, range hoods, dishwashers, water heaters, washers and dryers), Computers, Touchscreen Tablets, Smart Wearable Devices, Cameras, Aerial Cameras (drones), Camcorders, MP3 players and Cellular Phones (return details will vary by carrier service contract).”
Read the parenthetical, because electronics
is doing a lot of hiding: washers,
dryers, dishwashers and water heaters are on the same 90-day clock as a television. And the
clock runs from the day the member received the item, not from Christmas.
What 90 days from receipt means for gift timing
Arithmetic on Costco's own 90-days-from-receipt rule, read August 29, 2026.
That is the entire holiday strategy for Costco: on 90-day items, buying later gives the recipient more time, which is the opposite of the instinct that grabs the September deal. For everything off the list, buy whenever you like; no clock is running.
The gifts with no guarantee at all
The same page lists categories that cannot come back, and several are exactly what people
give in December: Gift Card and Ticket items are non-refundable
,
Shop Cards are non-refundable
, Precious metals are non-refundable
,
Airline and Live Performance Event items are non-refundable
, and custom special-order
product cannot be returned or refunded, except for warranty repair/replacement due to
failure to meet specifications
. Concert tickets and gold jewelry are done at purchase.
The receipt question the page never answers
The word receipt appears nowhere on Costco’s return policy page. It states where returns happen, and nothing about proving the purchase:
Quoted from Costco
“Products purchased at a Costco location need to be returned at the returns counter at any Costco warehouse. Items ordered online can be returned at any Costco warehouse -or- you can initiate a return through Costco.com.”
So this page cannot promise you a receipt-free gift return, and we will not promise it either. What the published text does establish: returns run through the warehouse counter, purchases are tied to membership, and for a gift the clean path runs through the member who bought it. Our full breakdown of the year-round rules is at the Costco return policy, examined.
Questions people actually ask
Can I return a Christmas gift to Costco in February?
If it is off the 90-day list, yes, the guarantee has no stated deadline. If it is on the list, count 90 days from the day it was received and check the calendar, not the season.
Does Costco take back opened electronics?
The 90-day clause does not distinguish opened from unopened; the deadline is the only
stated test. Carrier-contract phones are the exception, where return details will vary by
carrier service contract
.
Is there a restocking fee?
None appears anywhere on the published page. No return-shipping deduction is stated for online returns either.
What about diamonds?
Over 1.00ct, bring the paperwork: Members returning a diamond over 1.00ct must also
present all original paperwork (IGI and/or GIA certificates)
, after which a Costco
Graduate Gemologist inspects within 48 hours. The refund starts as a Jewelry Credit Memo.
