Amazon deep diveAmazon's return clock starts when the box arrives, not when you click buy.
Check which category your item falls into before you assume 30 days.
Amazon opens its policy with a promise, Easy shopping, simple returns - that's our promise,
and then hangs the whole thing on one sentence about delivery.
The default, in Amazon's own words
Quoted from Amazon
“Most items can be returned for a refund or replacement/exchange within 30 days of delivery as long as they are in original or unused condition.”
Delivery, not order date. An item that takes a week to ship does not lose that week from your return window.
Every exception, by day count
| 7 days | Unread Kindle purchases, undownloaded digital textbooks, Alexa-bought digital music |
|---|---|
| 15 days | Apple Brand & Boost Infinite Brand products; Amazon Haul items over $3 |
| 30 days | The default: most items sold on Amazon.com |
| 90 days | Most nonperishable baby products; mattresses (excl. crib); select Renewed items |
| 180 days | Wedding Registry gifts, bought by someone other than the registry owner |
| 365 days | Renewed items in “Premium” condition; Baby Registry gifts bought by a gift-giver |
Notice the registry pattern: the longer window belongs to a gift bought by someone other than the registry owner, not to the owner's own purchases. Renewed products split by condition grade: “Acceptable,” “Good,” or “Excellent” gets 90 days, and “Premium” alone gets a full year.
Third-party sellers: a different address, not a different clock
Quoted from Amazon
“When you order from a third-party seller that fulfills and ships their own inventory, your return is sent back to the seller instead of Amazon. Sellers must offer one of the following: A return address within the United States where you can ship the item; A prepaid return label; or A full refund without requesting the item be returned”
What changes is where the box goes back to. Amazon never states a shorter or longer window for
Marketplace orders, so we are not inventing one. To check a specific item, Amazon points to two
places: please check the product detail page before placing your order
and, after buying,
your Order History.
Fees: where Amazon gets specific about money
| Restocking fee | 100% of item price |
|---|---|
| Late fee, within 30 days of the return-by date | 20% of item price |
| Late fee, after 30 days | 100% of item price |
| Damage fee | Up to 50% (100% for Amazon Luxury) |
| Return shipping fee | Varies by item and method |
Quoted from Amazon
“Restocking Fee
You may be charged a fee when you return an item from any of the following product types:
Software and video games that are opened, activated, used, or missing parts.
Opened collectible cards, board games/table top games, collectible/chase variant figurines.
100% of the item price”
The damage fee is capped lower except for one category: Up to 50% of the
item price, except for Amazon Luxury items, which will be charged 100% of the item price.
The
return shipping fee has no fixed number; Amazon only names the triggers, You select a
shipping/drop-off option that is not free,… you return a heavy and/or bulky item,… you have
an unusually high return rate,
and calls the amount itself Varies by item and/or the shipping
method selected.
The late-fee clock, in order
As published by Amazon under Return Fees, read July 30, 2026.
What you can't return at all
Quoted from Amazon
“Some products are non-returnable, such as the following:
Perishables
Products that may pose potential health and safety risks if returned
Products with shipping restrictions
Customized products made specifically for you
Redeemable products
Amazon Pharmacy products
Pet medication products
Certain digital products
Automobiles”
Quoted from Amazon
“Additionally, products listed as “Final Sale” are non-returnable and non-refundable, including trading card games, specific discounted items, and items sold in the Amazon Haul store that are $3 and less.”
Amazon Pharmacy items get a third, separate line even though they already sit in the list above:
Items purchased from Amazon Pharmacy are not returnable or refundable.
Refund timing, once the return is accepted
Quoted from Amazon
“A refund will be provided if Amazon (or the third-party seller) has received the item, and determined that you are eligible for a refund. It can take up to 30 days for us to receive and process your return. In certain circumstances refund timeframes may be longer.”
After that, how fast the money actually reaches you depends on how you paid:
| Amazon Gift Card / balance | 2-3 hours |
|---|---|
| Credit card | 3-5 business days |
| Reward points | Up to 5 business days |
| Debit card, checking, EBT, cash | Up to 10 business days |
| Prepaid credit card | Up to 30 days |
| Promotional certificate | No refund issued |
A promotional certificate is the only payment method on Amazon's own table with no payout at
all. Amazon also flags a wrinkle the table doesn't show:
Once we issue your refund, it may take additional time for your financial institution to make
funds available in your account.

Amazon return policy FAQ
How long do I have to return an Amazon order?
Thirty days, counted from delivery, not order date, unless the item falls into one of the category exceptions above.
Does the return window differ for third-party Marketplace sellers?
Not by day count. The stated difference is where the return ships to, seller instead of Amazon.
When does a restocking fee apply, and how much is it?
On opened software, video games, and opened collectibles, board games, or chase-variant figurines, and it is 100% of the item price, not a partial deduction.
What items can't be returned to Amazon at all?
Perishables, health-and-safety-risk items, shipping-restricted items, customized items, redeemable products, Amazon Pharmacy and pet medication products, certain digital products, automobiles, and anything marked Final Sale.
How will I get my refund, and how long does it take?
Back to your original payment method, on a schedule that runs from 2-3 hours for a gift card up to 30 days for a prepaid credit card, once Amazon has received and approved the return.
