Best Buy deep dive

Best Buy's holiday return policy, as published today, is 15 days and a clause that makes things stricter.

Terms examined Aug 29, 2026 5 min read A November gift dies before Christmas
15 days from the day you receive it: the standard window on most products, holiday season included, until Best Buy publishes an extension. Activatable devices get 14.

Best Buy has run seasonal extensions in past years. As of our August 29, 2026 reading, none is published for 2026, and the only Holiday clause on the page shortens a category.

The windows, exactly as published

Most products, standard15 days
Most products, My Best Buy Plus™ / Total™ members60 days
Activatable devices (phones, cellular tablets, hotspots, cellular wearables)14 days, members too
Verizon activatable devices30 days
Halloween and Christmas decorations15 days, members too

Quoted from Best Buy

“If you want to return or exchange your purchase, please know that the time period begins the day you receive your product and applies to new, clearance, open-box, refurbished and pre-owned products.”
Return & Exchange Promise read August 29, 2026

Quoted from Best Buy

“Products in Halloween Decorations and Christmas Decorations categories can be returned within 15 days for all customers, including My Best Buy™, My Best Buy Plus™ and My Best Buy Total™ (“Membership Program”) members, for a full refund.”
Return & Exchange Promise read August 29, 2026

That second quote is the only place the word Holiday appears on the page, and it takes rights away: it caps decorations at 15 days even for members who normally get 60. The membership sentence carries its own carve-out too: My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total extended return timeframes do not apply to any Marketplace purchases, so third-party items in a Best Buy cart stay on the 15-day clock regardless of membership.

What this does to gift timing, on today's rules

Bought Nov 20, standard Return window ends Dec 5 Expired 20 days before Christmas
Bought Nov 20, Plus/Total member Return window ends Jan 19 The 60-day tier is the de facto holiday policy you can buy
Any phone or cellular device 14 days, membership does not help Plus a $45 restocking fee if opened

Arithmetic on Best Buy's published windows, read August 29, 2026. If a 2026 holiday extension is published, this table changes; see the note below.

The fees that ride along

Quoted from Best Buy

“There is no restocking fee if the product is unopened, or if the purchase occurs in: AL, CO, HI, IA, MS, OH, OK, SC and where prohibited by law. The restocking fee will be taxed in select states.”
Return & Exchange Promise read August 29, 2026

The published fee table has two tiers: $45 for activatable devices (prepaid phones excluded), and 15% of the purchase price for drones, digital cameras, camera lenses, camcorders, projectors, projector screens, golf launch monitors, premium scooters and several other categories. An opened drone gifted at Christmas costs its recipient 15% to change their mind, on top of the 15-day clock.

Gifts, receipts, and how the money comes back

Quoted from Best Buy

“If the product was purchased from Best Buy, we will provide you store credit for the purchase price of a gift you return in store. For gifts returned via mail, we will credit the gift purchaser and notify them via email.”
Return & Exchange Promise read August 29, 2026

Quoted from Best Buy

“Reimbursements on returns lacking proof of purchase may require an email address, will be in the form of store credit, may be denied or limited, and state sales taxes and fees will not be reimbursed.”
Return & Exchange Promise read August 29, 2026

Two more published rules matter in January: cash purchases over $800 (and checks or non-logo debit over $250) are refunded by check within 10 business days, not at the counter; and a return missing accessories or packaging can be denied or docked a nonrefundable deduction on your refund for what is missing. Bundle discounts unwind too: return only part of a bundle and the discount is clawed back from the refund.

The gifts that cannot come back at all

From the published nonreturnable list: custom and personalized orders, Final Sale items, digital content and codes, prepaid cards (including third-party gift cards and prepaid phone cards), memberships, trading cards (including Pokémon cards), e-bikes and e-mopeds. And a second list is nonreturnable once opened, including LEGO products, SIM kits, and consumables like batteries and ink. Pokémon cards and LEGO are two of the most gifted items in America, and both sit on a no-way-back list most shoppers have never read.

The late-October check is the whole game here. Best Buy has published holiday extensions in past years, and if one comes for 2026 it will land on this same policy page. We re-read it in late October and update this page under a fresh date either way. Until then, the published policy is the one above, and a November gift on the standard tier is out of time before it is unwrapped. The year-round breakdown is at the Best Buy return policy, examined.

Questions people actually ask

Will Best Buy publish a holiday extension for 2026?

Unknown, and we will not guess. Past years had one; today's page does not. This page gets re-read and re-dated in late October when seasonal policies typically appear.

Is membership worth it just for returns?

The 60-day tier is the only published way to give a November gift that survives to January on most products. Whether that is worth a membership fee is your math; the windows above are the published inputs.

Does the 15-day clock start at purchase or delivery?

Receipt: the time period begins the day you receive your product, and it applies to new, clearance, open-box, refurbished and pre-owned alike.

What about a phone bought as a gift?

Fourteen days, membership does not extend it, a $45 restocking fee applies if opened, and if a carrier contract is attached you are responsible for cancelling the service and its charges. Phones are the least forgiving gift on the page.
