Examined Sep 18, 2026 Paid in dog toys, not cash 6 or 12 month commitment

BarkBox gives new subscribers a free extra toy in every box for a year, but only on a 6 or 12 month plan that BARK's terms say you pay for in full even if you cancel.

Worth it ifyou had already decided to keep BarkBox for six months or more. The extra toy is an add-on BARK sells at $9 a month. The price of getting it free is a commitment of at least 6 times $27, or $162, with no early exit in the terms.

BARK's offer page says: “Our gift to new subscribers, a free extra toy in every box for a year.” A standard box holds 2 toys and 2 bags of treats, and shipping is included. The extra toy is BARK's Extra Toy Club, which the sign-up funnel sells at $9 a month. Twelve months at $9 is $108. The funnel calls it a $144 value, which is 12 times the $12 value BARK puts on each toy. No invitation or code is involved.

On a 6 or 12 month plan, cancelling does not stop the charges. The plans are billed monthly, and the funnel says you are committing to the length of your plan. BARK's Terms of Service go further: you are charged each month of the term even if you have cancelled before it ends. At the listed prices that is 6 times $27, or $162, on the shorter plan and 12 times $24, or $288, on the longer one. BARK's FAQ says that if you ask to end a commitment early, the cancellation takes effect at the end of your current subscription term.

The funnel promises the 6-month plan a free extra toy “in every order for the next year”, yet a 6-month term is six boxes. No page we read explains how the two fit. Our plain reading is that you would have to let the plan renew for a second term to see twelve free toys, and that is a second commitment at whatever price applies then.

Do this, in this order

  1. Choose the term before the toy. A year on the monthly plan is 12 times $30, or $360, and you can leave at any point. The 12-month plan is $288, which is $72 less, but every month of it is owed. If you are not sure your dog will take to the box, one month at $30 is a cheaper test than a $162 commitment.
  2. Choose how you pay. The funnel offers monthly billing or paying upfront, labeled SAVE 10%. Both renew: “Pay upfront and automatically renews. You are committing to the length of your BarkBox plan.” The prepaid totals were blank in the copy we saved, so read them at checkout.
  3. Check the Extra Toy Club step shows $0.00. In the funnel we saved, that step carried the usual $9 a month beside $0.00 a month, with a yes and a no button. If yours shows $9, you are not on the promotion.
  4. Turn off auto-renewal the day you sign up. The FAQ says: “You may disable the auto-renewal on your multi-month subscription commitment at any time from your account dashboard”. Leave it on and the terms renew the plan for a new period of the same length unless you cancel before the first day of the month after the period ends. A request after that day applies to the following period.
  5. Check your account before the thirteenth box. No page we read says whether the extra toy stops after the free year or starts to cost $9 a month.
IF YOU HAVE COMMITTED TO A SUBSCRIPTION PLAN LASTING LONGER THAN ONE MONTH (I.E., 6 OR 12 MONTH PLANS), YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE CHARGED EACH MONTH DURING THAT SUBSCRIPTION PERIOD, EVEN IF YOU HAVE CANCELLED YOUR SUBSCRIPTION PRIOR TO THE END OF THAT SUBSCRIPTION PERIOD.

What BARK does not publish, and where its pages are out of date

The free-toy offer has no terms of its own. The offer page carries many blocks headed Terms & Conditions, but they belong to other promotions, and their dates have passed. One reads: “Offer valid through December 12, 2025, at 8:30 AM ET, or while supplies last.” Another ends February 9, 2026. None mentions the extra toy. So BARK does not say who counts as a new subscriber, whether the offer has an end date, or what follows the free year.

The referral page has a figure that cannot be right. The referral page tells a member to “Give your friends $20 off their first purchase of $4”. The $4 is BARK's; no BarkBox plan costs $4. Everything else sits behind a form asking for your email address, which we did not fill in. We cannot tell you the real minimum purchase, or whether the $20 combines with the free toys.

Refunds, prices and your card. The termination section of the terms says: “To the fullest extent permitted by law, BARK will have no obligation to provide a refund of any amount previously paid to BARK.” The funnel's 100% Happy Guarantee promises only that BARK will work to make it right. Prices may change at any time, though not for a subscription period already under way. If your card expires and you do nothing, the terms authorize BARK to keep billing it, including extending the expiration date.

Who can order, and the links we do not carry. The terms took effect May 20, 2026 and limit the service to people 18 and older. BARK ships to the contiguous United States and other regions where offered, and confirms your address at checkout. A new order typically arrives 5 to 10 business days after billing. BARK also runs a separate affiliate program, which gives you nothing. This page carries no link from it or from the referral program.

Is it worth your time?

If you already meant to keep BarkBox for a year, yes. The 12-month plan costs $72 less than twelve monthly boxes, and the extra toy adds an add-on worth $108 at BARK's own price. Turn off auto-renewal on day one and note the month the free year ends.

If you are only curious, the toy is the wrong reason to sign a term. A free toy that BARK sells for $9 does not offset five more boxes at $27 each, or $135, that you would owe after deciding in month one that the box is not for your dog. Start monthly, and move to a longer plan later if the box earns it. Whether the free toys are still offered to you then is something BARK does not say.
