Examined Sep 30, 2026 Free meat, not cash Ends when you cancel

ButcherBox gives new members a choice: free NY strips or filet mignons in every order for a year, or free chicken breasts in every order for life.

Worth it ifyou were going to buy meat by subscription anyway. The free protein comes with each subscription order, so its worth depends on how often you order, it ends when you cancel, and the offer page we read does not print what a box costs.

The fine print under the email box reads: “Free 2 x 10 oz NY Strips or 2 x 6 oz Filet mignons in every subscription order for a year. Or choose free 3 lbs Chicken Breasts in every subscription order for lifetime of membership.” You choose one, not all three. The page prices them at $924, $818 and $1,037, but adds that the “Value based on non-member subscribing and ordering a subscription box every 2 weeks.” Order less often and you get less. No link, code or invitation is needed, and there is no dollar discount in this offer.

For life means for the life of the subscription, and for a year means only while you subscribe. ButcherBox's help center says: “If you cancel your subscription, you will also lose your membership perks including Sizzle Society points, For Life and For A Year Offers, and Member Deals.” The offer is for new members only, and nothing we read says a member who cancels and comes back can claim it again. If you only need a break, reschedule the box instead of canceling.

What pays what

A new member joining from the get-started pageOne of: two 10 oz NY strips or two 6 oz filet mignons free in every subscription order for a year, or 3 lbs of chicken breasts free in every subscription order for life
A new member joining from the bacon-for-life page10 oz of bacon in every subscription order; no dollar discount
Gift cards, gift certificates, non-subscription boxes, prior purchasesNothing
An address outside the contiguous USNothing
Sizzle Society points on what you spend2 points per $1; 1,000 points buys $10 of credit
A member who cancelsLoses points, tiers and the For Life or For A Year offer

The points are modest. At 2 points per $1, 1,000 points takes $500 of subscription spending, and $10 back on $500 is 2%. The Loyalty Program Terms add a clock: “Points expire if you have not made a ButcherBox subscription purchase in the previous rolling six (6) months.”

Do this, in this order

  1. Start from the get-started page, and read the cart before you pay. ButcherBox has two new-member pages live at once. The get-started page carries the offer described here. The bacon-for-life page offers 10 oz of bacon per order and no dollar discount, and its fine print still reads “Offer valid until 6/30/26 or while supplies last.” We read that on September 18, 2026 and again on September 30, 2026. Both pages say the offer cannot be combined with any other offer, so make sure the one in your cart is the one you chose.
  2. Find the box price before you count the free meat. The offer page we read prints no box price. ButcherBox's homepage lists $8.52 to $15.23 a pound for its Signature Medium subscription box, with pricing effective 1/8/2026, and says shipping is free. Work out what a box costs you at checkout, then decide what two steaks or 3 lbs of chicken on top of it are worth to you.
  3. Put the bill date in your calendar. The Terms of Use say the subscription is continuous until you cancel it, and that you are responsible for any order processed before you cancel. The help center gives the deadline that matters: “To guarantee changes, please make all change by 11:59 pm EST the day before your bill date.” That is Eastern time, wherever you live.
  4. Reschedule instead of canceling when you need a break. The help center says you can delay your next box 1 or 2 weeks, or pick a specific date up to 3 months away, and that your subscription will remain active. The loss of perks is tied to canceling, and the point expiry is tied to six months without a subscription purchase.
  5. Open the box the day it arrives. The Terms of Use ask you to report damage by email or phone within seven (7) days of receipt, with a description and photos. For courier damage they add that filing a claim does not guarantee a refund. For other problems ButcherBox says it may offer a replacement, credit towards your next box, or a partial or full refund.
Please note that we are unable to guarantee cancelation of an order that has already billed or is processing. Please make sure subscription or order cancelation requests are made before 11:59 pm EST the day before your next bill date.

Where ButcherBox's own pages disagree, and what it does not publish

Two offers, two end dates. One page promises free steaks for a year or free chicken for life until October 27, 2026. The other promises bacon alone under a date, June 30, 2026, that had passed three months before we last read it. Both were live on the same day, September 30, 2026.

Values that depend on how often you order. The $924, $818 and $1,037 figures are “Value based on non-member subscribing and ordering a subscription box every 2 weeks”, at prices “as of 7/30/26”. The homepage counts the same kind of offer as “free protein for 12 months with the value of up to $422.” The free meat comes with each subscription order, so fewer orders means less of it.

The referral reward. The referral help article names no amount. It sends members to a Refer and Earn dashboard inside their account to see the current offer and its terms. What it does publish are the limits: five referrals every 30 days, and “the link to recipients is valid for 7 days and can only be clicked once to apply the discount”.

How long the offer will really run. The printed date comes with a reservation: “ButcherBox reserves the right to cancel this offer at any time in its sole discretion and substitute another promotion in its place.” ButcherBox has done exactly that once already, as the next paragraph shows. The homepage adds that “we’re almost always running a sign-up promotion that lets you enjoy a free protein for a year.” The Terms of Use, last updated February 6, 2025, also let ButcherBox adjust prices, with advance notice if the change affects your current subscription.

Until September 28, 2026. When we read the get-started page on September 18 and September 20, 2026, it offered new members 2 lbs of ground beef and 10 oz of bacon free in every subscription order for the lifetime of the membership, plus $17 off each of their first six subscription orders, $102 in all. Its fine print said “Offer valid until 9/28/26 or while supplies last.” The page disagreed with itself about that discount: the banner said $100 off, the fine print said “In addition, members will get $17 off their first six (6) subscription orders”, which is $102, and the footnote behind its $1,036 value counted the discount as $100 again. That offer ended on September 28, 2026, and on September 30 the free protein offer above had taken its place.

Is it worth your time?

If you already wanted a meat subscription, yes. The offer costs you nothing extra to claim, needs no code, and the free protein keeps coming with each order: for a year if you pick the steaks, for as long as you stay a member if you pick the chicken. Take it from the get-started page before October 27, 2026, and check the cart shows the protein you chose.

If you were not planning to subscribe, the offer should not decide it for you. It is built to reward staying: there is no discount on the first box, and the free meat and your points end the day you cancel. The value only adds up over many orders, on a box whose price you have to find for yourself.
