Uphold Examined Jul 27, 2026 Paid in bitcoin Both sides get paid

Uphold pays $20 in bitcoin to both sides. Funding the account is only half of it.

Worth it ifyou are in the Americas and were opening an Uphold account anyway. Twenty dollars is a modest return for moving $100 in and converting $100 on top of it, inside a 30 day window, and then waiting up to another six weeks to be paid in a currency that moves while you wait.
$20 each side, in bitcoinTwo conditions: fund $100, convert $100Up to 45 days after month endExamined Jul 26
$20worth of bitcoin for you, and the same again for the person whose referral link you used, once you fund $100 and separately convert $100 into a cryptocurrency

Both sides are paid the same amount, and as the referrer you can earn it on up to 20 qualified referrals per calendar month. Every Uphold figure below comes from the company's own referral programme terms, last updated 5 August 2025 and read on 26 July 2026.

A correction to our own page, briefly. On 25 July we withdrew the $20 figure from this page, because our only recent read of Uphold's terms had come from a cached copy and Uphold's site was refusing us. On 26 July we got Uphold's own terms page open. It says $20, and it confirms the two conditions, the 45 day payout, the New York exclusion and the December 2026 end date exactly as we had them.

The link is the mechanism, not a formality. Uphold's terms are blunt about this: if the referred person joins Uphold by any other method, including by visiting the Uphold site or the Uphold app directly, the referral does not qualify. There is no code to add afterwards. Click the actual link, and sign up in the session it opens.

Residents of New York StateExcluded

The eligible list is narrower than the usual "everywhere except New York" summary. Uphold names the United States excluding the state of New York, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Belize, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Paraguay, Suriname, El Salvador and Uruguay. That is the Americas and nothing else. Europe is excluded outright, in those words.

Do this, in this order

  1. Check the country list before you spend a minute on it. The United States except New York, plus the Latin American and Caribbean countries named above. If you are in Europe, the terms say the programme is not available to you.
  2. Open the referral link and sign up from inside it. Not the app store, not uphold.com, not a code typed in later. This is the single condition that quietly disqualifies the most people, and it costs your friend their $20 as well as your own.
  3. Fund the account with at least $100, by bank transfer or by debit or credit card. Those are the two funding methods the terms name for this requirement.
  4. Then convert at least $100 from national currency into a cryptocurrency. National currency, often called fiat, just means ordinary government money like dollars. The terms want a conversion of at least $100 out of that and into crypto, on top of the deposit. Many write-ups describe this offer as a funding bonus with no trade required, and that is simply wrong: money in and money converted are two different boxes, and the same $100 can usually tick both, but only if you actually perform the conversion.
  5. Do all of it inside 30 calendar days of the account being opened. The clock starts when the referred person opens the account, not when they click the link and not when the money arrives. Bank transfers can take several days to clear.
  6. Then wait. Payment comes within 45 calendar days from the end of the month in which the referral qualified. Qualify on 2 March and you can be waiting until mid May. The reward is bitcoin, and the terms say its cash value is worked out at the moment of payout rather than the moment you qualified.

The fine print that can still cost you

The price risk is yours, and Uphold says so in writing. The reward's value in ordinary money is calculated at the moment of the payout, meaning when the bitcoin is transferred into the wallet. The terms then note that bitcoin is volatile and that Uphold is not responsible for any change in value.

The 30 day clock covers everything, and it starts early. Both the funding and the conversion must be complete within 30 calendar days of the referred person opening their account. Two separate actions, one window, and the window opens at the moment of signup.

Referring is capped monthly, not annually. A maximum of 20 qualified referrals per calendar month, which is $400 a month at $20 each. No lifetime cap is stated.

The programme has an end date on it. The terms run the promotion from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026 at 11:59pm EST. A 30 day qualifying window means the practical deadline for a new signup falls before it.

The figures circulating elsewhere do not match the terms. Several sites advertise $25 for this offer, and several quote a $250 funding threshold. Uphold's own terms publish neither number.

Is it worth your time?

Twenty dollars, for $100 funded, $100 converted, a 30 day deadline and a wait that can run past six weeks. That is a thin return for the amount of choreography involved, and the payment arriving in bitcoin means the $20 you earned is not necessarily the $20 you receive. Gemini pays $50 and Kraken up to $75 for a comparable afternoon, so if you are shopping purely for a signup reward, start there. The case for doing this one is that you wanted an Uphold account for its own reasons, in which case take the $20 as a rebate on your first conversion rather than as a payday, and set yourself a reminder for day 25.

  • Uphold, for $100 funded and $100 converted inside 30 days$20
  • Gemini, in the US, for $100 of trading$50

Two fixed figures, drawn to scale. Uphold pays in bitcoin, priced at the moment it lands; the Gemini figure comes from our guide to it. Kraken is left off these bars because its $75 is a maximum, not a flat amount.
