Uber Eats deep diveUber Eats promo code not working? Find the reason in 60 seconds.
Part of the Uber Eats series: the full referral guide, with every quote from Uber's rules
Three separate expiry clocks run against a single Uber Eats referral, and two of them start without anybody telling you. Your promo code has almost certainly expired on one of them. If all three are still running, the next most likely cause is that the account trying to use the offer is not new to Uber in a way the app can see. Two of the five causes below have a genuine fix. The rest do not.

| The invitation your friend sent you | 90 days from send date |
|---|---|
| The reward, once the invitee activates the offer | 60 days from activation |
| The referrer's promo code, sitting unused | 3 months |
| An account that is not new to the service | No clock, just no |
The first two come from Uber's Referral Program Rules; the third from Uber's Uber Eats help article.
Which one hit you, and what to do about it
Dead, but replaceable 1. The invitation aged out at 90 days
How to confirm: find the message your friend originally sent and check its date. Uber's rules say referral invitations expire 90 days from the date they were sent, not from when you opened it.
What to do: ask the same friend to send a fresh invitation from inside their app. That starts a new 90-day clock and costs neither of you anything. It does not revive the old link, so delete the old one.
Do not go hunting for a replacement on coupon sites. Uber's rules ban making a referral link public and name the places: coupon websites, job websites, Amazon, eBay, Fiverr, Craigslist, RetailMeNot, Reddit, Wikipedia, Gumtree, MoneySavingExpert, Groupon, and paid social or paid search. A code lifted from any of those can be pulled at any time, and the amount is personalised to the recipient anyway.
Hard loss, no fix 2. The reward aged out at 60 days from activation
How to confirm: Uber's rules say referral rewards expire 60 days from the date the invitee activates the referral offer. Activation happens when the new user taps the invitation and the offer attaches to their account, not when they order. If they tapped in March and ordered in June, the reward was already gone.
What to do: nothing. The rules contain no grace clause, no reinstatement clause, and no appeal path.
Hard loss, no fix 3. The referrer's promo code sat for three months
How to confirm: this applies if you did the inviting. Per Uber's help article, your friend orders, a promo code lands on your account, and that code will "automatically apply to your current or next order and expires after 3 months if not used".
What to do: nothing retrospectively. Next time, place an order you were going to place anyway the day the code lands, since it auto-applies.
Usually terminal 4. The account is not new to Uber
How to confirm: the question is broader than "have I used Uber Eats before?". The invitee must "be a new Uber user of that service or a user who has not used the Uber service within a certain period of time". Separately, invitees "cannot have more than one account for each Uber product or service", and "can be referred only once, so if someone else has referred them and they have accepted that invitation they will not be able to accept yours".
A genuinely lapsed user can still qualify, but the rules never define how long the lapse must be or how Uber decides whether you are new. What counts as prior Uber history is broader than most readers assume:
The accounts you are not thinking of
- Your Uber rides account. Uber Eats is not a separate login. A single ride years ago, or an empty account with zero orders, is an account the Eats app recognises the moment you sign in; nothing in Uber's rules ties eligibility to having placed an order.
- An account somebody else set up on your phone. A partner's account, one made for a one-off airport ride. The device and the phone number do not care whose you think it is.
- An invitation you already accepted from someone else. Invitees can be referred only once, and accepting is enough; you do not need to have ordered. If you tapped a friend's link in January and a different friend's link in July, the second one was never going to work.
- An old account under an abandoned email address. Uber's rules never say they match on email, phone number, device or payment card. But the one-account-per-product rule, plus Uber's right to retract rewards it believes were earned improperly, tells you some deduplication is happening in a shape Uber does not publish.
What to do: if any of the above applies, the offer was never yours to collect, and no ticket changes that. Do not open a second account to try again: that is a terms breach, and Uber reserves the right to respond with "the forfeiture or retraction of Uber credits, money, or other rewards earned through the program and even the deactivation of your account". Losing a discount is annoying. Losing the account you use to get home is worse.
Not the code's fault 5. The qualifying order never completed
How to confirm: check whether the triggering order was cancelled or refunded. Uber's rules say cancelled trips or orders do not count toward the minimum requirements.
What to do: if the invitee is still inside the 60-day window from activation, another qualifying order should still fire the referral. If the window has closed, see cause two. The code was never issued, so there is nothing for support to restore.
When the code works but takes off less than you expected
Uber does not publish a referral amount anywhere. Its rules say referral rewards are discretionary and that the amount and the requirements to get one can vary both by city and within a city. The figures live in what Uber calls the Specific Reward Terms, attached to your particular invitation or shown in your app. The one number on an Uber-hosted page, a help-article button labelled "Get $10 off your order", is a button label in one market, not a program-wide promise.
The rules also say that an invitee who signs up in a city different from yours may receive a different referral offer than the one your invitation stated. A friend's screenshot shows their city's number, not yours.
The rules say nothing about whether a referral code applies to delivery fees, service fees, taxes or the tip. In practice the relief tends to land on the food while the extras sit outside it, and we flag that as an expectation, not a documented rule, because Uber has documented nothing.
The one contradiction worth noticing
Uber's help article instructs you to "Share your referral code onto emails, social media, or anywhere else". Uber's Referral Program Rules ban exactly that, prohibiting making the link available to the general public including "using paid social media or paid search". The legal document governs and carries the forfeiture language, so follow the rules: send the invitation to people directly.
How to write a message support will act on
If you hit an expiry, a ticket will return a template. If the qualifying order genuinely completed and was not refunded, that is a data question worth raising. Put everything in the first message: the invitation date, the activation date if you can establish it, the order date and order ID, confirmation the order was not cancelled or refunded, and one sentence saying what should have happened. A message with dates and an order ID gets a human review.
Promo code FAQ
Why is my Uber Eats promo code not working?
Usually expiry: one of the three clocks in the table above has run. If none has, the account is probably not new to Uber.
Can an expired Uber Eats referral code be reinstated?
No. The rules contain no grace, reinstatement or appeal clause. A fresh invitation from the same friend starts a new clock; it does not revive the dead one.
Does an old Uber rides account block the Uber Eats referral?
Possibly. The rules require a new user of that service, or one lapsed for an undefined period. Assume any prior Uber account is a risk, and never open a second one to get around it.
My friend was promised more than the code gave me. Why?
Amounts vary by city and within a city, and follow whoever receives the offer. No figure appears in Uber's rules.
Does a cancelled order still count?
No. Cancelled trips or orders do not count toward the minimum requirements, so the code was never issued.
