Otter's referral gives you a real free month, under a contract that still talks about cancelling a reservation.
Otter publishes no figure at all for what the person who shared the link earns, only a lifetime ceiling, and the terms that decide all of it carry the date March 21, 2019.
What pays what
| You, signing up through someone's valid referral link | 1 month of Pro Lite, 300 min |
|---|---|
| The person who shared the link with you | No published figure |
| A sharer's lifetime ceiling, across everyone they refer | 10,000 minutes, 12 months Pro Lite |
| Anyone on an Otter Business plan, either side | Nothing |
| Cash instead of the free month | Not available |
| Passing your free month to a friend or colleague | Not allowed |
| This site, for writing this page | Nothing, by Otter's own rule |
The reward is written as access to Otter Pro Lite, not Otter Pro. Pro Lite does not appear on Otter's public pricing page as something you can buy, and 300 minutes is a real ceiling: roughly five hours of recording before the month stops being useful.
Do this, in this order
- Get the link from a person, not from a page like this one. Otter's terms are explicit that referrals "should only be used for personal and non-commercial purposes" and that referral links "should not be published or distributed on commercial websites (such as coupon websites, or Wikipedia)." So ask a colleague who already uses Otter to send you theirs.
- Check which kind of Otter account you are joining. One flat line in the terms says "Referral Program rewards are not available to users of Otter Business."
- Use exactly one link. The terms say a referred friend may only use one referral link, and where several arrive, only the person whose link you actually used gets credited.
- Read the invitation itself, because it is part of the contract. Your month is described as Pro Lite with a 300 minute limit "indicated in the referral invitation or accompanying promotional materials." The terms repeatedly hand the actual numbers to a document that is not published anywhere public. Screenshot it before you click.
- If you are the one sharing, ask what you are being promised before you count on it. Otter publishes no per-referral amount. The terms say "the referring Otter Customers will receive the Referral Rewards amount specified for the Qualifying Account Creation, if any." A contract that writes "if any" beside your payment is telling you the amount may be zero.
- Do not plan a paid subscription around the referral. For the larger reward tied to a paid plan, the subscription "must be subscribed and paid for via the Otter platform, and the referred friend must complete the 1st billing cycle of the subscription before the referring Otter Customers can receive Referral Rewards." Cancel inside that first cycle and their reward never exists.
- Put the expiry in your calendar the day it lands, not the day you decide to use it. Rewards "will be automatically redeemed on the date of the referred friends' Qualifying Action date" and "will expire 12 months from the redemption date."
The fine print that can still cost you the reward
There is a hard lifetime ceiling, and it is measured in minutes. "The maximum Referral Reward that can be earned per Otter Customers will be 10,000 minutes total in respect of minutes and 12 months of access to Otter Pro Lite service in respect of access to Otter Pro Lite service."
A cancellation at any time voids the reward. The clause covering paid subscriptions withdraws the reward if the person referred is the referrer, "or if the reservation is canceled at any time." A cancelled subscription unwinds the reward, with no window stated after which it is safe.
You cannot pool rewards across accounts. "Referral Rewards may not be earned by creating multiple Otter Accounts. Referral Rewards accrued in separate Otter accounts may not be combined into one Otter account."
A programme you cannot read can outrank the one you can. Where a referred friend receives links from more than one Otter programme, "preference will be given to payment via the Host Referral Program, voiding eligibility from The Program." The Host Referral Program is named there and defined nowhere. We could not find a page for it. So a reward can be voided in favour of a set of rules that is not published.
Disputes are settled by one party, and it is not you. "All decisions regarding your balance will be final and at Otter's sole discretion." There is no appeal described anywhere in the document.
Your free month is locked to you. "The access to Otter Pro Lite service may not be transferred to another person, exchanged for cash, or combined with other Otter referral programs or incentives."
Tax is yours, including VAT where it applies. "You are responsible for any Tax consequences if any, that may result from your redemption or use of Referral Rewards," and Otter notes it may have to account for VAT on services the rewards are redeemed against.
The rules, the rewards, and the programme itself can all change without warning. "We can update these terms at any time without prior notice," Otter "may suspend or terminate the Program or a user's ability to participate in it at any time for any reason," and "the scope, variety, and type of services and products that you may obtain by redeeming Referral Rewards can change at any time." The document also carries the standard "Void where prohibited."
Skip this offer if
- Your account sits under Otter Business. The exclusion is absolute and stated in one line.
- You were hoping to earn from sharing. There is no published rate to evaluate, the ceiling is in minutes rather than money, and the reward expires on a clock you do not control.
- You need more than about five hours of transcription in your free month. 300 minutes is the cap.
- You were sent here by a page promising an Otter coupon. We found no code and did not go looking for one to publish.
Is it worth your time?
If a colleague already uses Otter and can send you a link, take it. A free month of Pro Lite with 300 minutes costs you nothing; treat it as a trial rather than a discount. Just do not build anything on it. The month is small, the tier is not one you can buy afterwards, and the day it ends you are choosing an Otter plan at full price like everybody else.
If you are here to earn by sharing, the honest answer is that you cannot evaluate what you are being offered, because Otter has not published it.
