OKX’s live terms still mention mystery boxes. Nowhere does it publish the odds.
We went looking for the odds in every place OKX could reasonably have put them, and came back with an absence rather than a number. That absence is the whole story of this page, so it is worth being precise about what we checked and what we found, because “we could not find it” and “it is not there” are different claims and only one of them is fair to publish.
There are two OKX companies, and only one of them is yours
OKX is one brand covering several separate companies, and the referral rules, the entity you contract with, and the regulator behind it all change depending on where you live:
The US company. “OKX INC. (‘OKX US’) operates under the OKX brand and is a federally registered money service business and a state licensed money transmitter (NMLS ID: 1767779).” Then the line that decides this page: “Foreign entities affiliated with OKX use the OKX brand to offer services and products to non-US users. US users are expressly prohibited from accessing any of those foreign products and services.”
The European company. “The program is tailored for users under OKX Europe Ltd. Both referrers and referees have to be under OKX Europe Ltd to be eligible. OKX is the trading name of OKX Europe Ltd, a Malta registered co. licensed by the MFSA as a CASP.” A CASP is a crypto-asset service provider, the licence category European regulators use for exchanges.
Crossing between them pays nothing. “If an invitation involves a cross-region scenario (for example, a Brazilian user inviting a non-Brazilian user, or an APAC user inviting a European Economic Area user), the inviter will not be eligible to receive the corresponding referral rewards.”
One practical note we tested rather than assumed. From a US connection, okx.com, okx.com/en, okx.com/join and app.okx.com all redirect to the /en-us site. The European site does load if you go to it directly, so the wall is contractual. Being able to open a page you are prohibited from using is not permission.
The mystery box, and the hole where its odds should be
OKX’s referral has, at various times, paid out through mystery boxes: you complete a task, you open a box, and the box decides what you get. That mechanic is still referenced in OKX’s live European referral terms, in the only surviving first-party mention we could find:
Quoted from OKX
“OKX may delay the distribution of rewards due to system issues or other special circumstances. If you have not received the Mystery Boxes or Rewards within 48 hours after your friends complete the task, please contact customer service.”
So the boxes exist in the paperwork. What does not exist, anywhere we can reach, is any statement of what is inside one or how likely any outcome is. Here is where we looked, on July 25, 2026:
| The referral program FAQ, updated July 19, 2026 | No odds, no box |
|---|---|
| The EEA referral terms, updated July 3, 2026 | Boxes named once, no odds |
| The US referral bonus terms, updated May 29, 2026 | No box, no odds |
| The OKX Academy article explaining mystery boxes | Redirects to an index; article gone |
| The newcomers campaign page | “Campaign not found” |
| Two help pages named for mystery box rewards and rules | Both 404 |
| An OKX brand or press page, checked while we were there | 404 as well |
The same silence covers the ordinary rewards, not just the boxes. OKX writes: “During each referral campaign, the rewards you receive may vary. You could receive fixed crypto rewards, or various rewards worth up to a certain amount, for each successful referral. Log in to your account on the OKX app and visit the referral page to check the latest reward offers you’re eligible for.” There is no public price list.
What pays what
| You, under the right OKX entity, having finished the tasks | An amount shown only in the app |
|---|---|
| The odds on any mystery box | Not published on any OKX page |
| You, in the United States, on a non-US OKX product | Expressly prohibited |
| An inviter and an invitee in different regions | Inviter earns nothing |
| A referral code added after the account exists | Too late, permanently |
| Anyone already in OKX’s affiliate program | Locked out of referral rewards |
| Sub-accounts, as inviter or invitee | Not eligible |
| This site, for writing this page | Nothing |
On the affiliate row: “Affiliates and sub-affiliates are only eligible for affiliate program rewards and can’t participate in the referral program.” Choosing one closes the other, and OKX’s affiliate side only opens once you have already referred ten valid new users under the ordinary program.
Do this, in this order
- Establish which OKX company you would be a customer of. The rules, the reward, the regulator and the paperwork all differ between OKX INC. in the United States and the foreign entities such as OKX Europe Ltd in Malta. If you are in the US, your offer is the separate OKX US referral, not this one.
- If you are in the United States, stop at the sentence above. A workaround is a breach of the terms of the company holding your money, and OKX reserves the right to suspend, freeze and seal accounts and the assets inside them.
- Enter the referral code before the account exists. OKX says referral codes “must be added before invitees create their accounts”, and that the relationship “can’t be changed” once registration or identity verification is complete. This mistake has no fix.
- Finish advanced identity verification, and check the feature is even offered to you. OKX requires the advanced level of KYC to take part, notes that the referral feature is “not available to all users”, and requires app version 6.66.0 or above.
- Open your own referral page in the app and screenshot it. Every OKX document defers the amount, the deadline and the qualifying task to that screen. Note the reward, the task, the deadline and the claim window before you start.
- Complete the tasks inside 14 days, using deposit methods that count. “Depositing cryptos via internal transfers, red packets, rewards, and purchases via P2P sharing order will not be counted.” Moving crypto in from another OKX account is the natural thing to do and it is the thing that does not qualify.
- Claim the reward from the app, inside its window. “Each reward must be claimed within the specified event period stated on your referral page or it will expire. You can only claim the reward from the OKX app.”
- Then leave the money where it is. OKX describes a 7-day lock-up in its referral FAQ, a 30-day qualifying period on the European new user bonus during which the reward can be traded but not withdrawn, and on the US program a distribution window of up to 30 days followed by a further lock of up to 30 days.
The fine print that can still cost you the reward
You can pick the right entity, add the code in time, verify, deposit through an eligible channel, trade, claim inside the window, and still end up with nothing. These are the clauses that decide it.
There is a cap, and OKX does not say what it is. “You can invite as many friends as you’d like, but there’s a maximum reward cap per campaign cycle. Invitations beyond the cap won’t earn additional rewards.”
The budget can simply run out. “OKX may adjust the total rewards budget at its discretion. Once any applicable reward allocation is fully distributed, no further rewards will be granted.” The US version puts it as first come, first served, terminable “in part or completely, at any time with or without notice”.
On the US side, the invited friend gets nothing from the referral itself. The new customer “is not paid out through a referral amount, but they may qualify for Welcome Rewards through our New User Bonus promotion”. The referrer’s bonus arrives only once the new customer trades the required amount “in a single transaction within the designated time period”. A single transaction, not a running total.
And on the US side the reward can be taken back after it lands. The invited user must maintain assets under management of at least the specified amount “for a total of 30 days within a 90-day period after the bonus is received”, and if they fail that, “the reward will be reclaimed by OKX”.
The reward is crypto, priced the instant it is handed over. “The amount of cryptocurrency reward is calculated at the time of disbursement and based on the spot market price of that cryptocurrency at that time”, and the value “may fluctuate and may not be equal in value at the time a recipient has the ability to withdraw”.
The rules can change under you, the tax is yours, and geography can rule you out quietly. “OKX reserves the right to terminate the program at any time and to interpret or modify the terms and conditions of this program at any time without prior notice.” If you are disqualified, you agree to let OKX “deduct, offset, or otherwise claw back such value” from your account, and taxes and fees on a bonus are “the sole responsibility” of the person who received it. On the US side, products “may be restricted depending on the state in which you reside”, with the list held in a separate compliance document, so no state list appears here.
Is it worth your time?
As an exchange, OKX is a serious operation with real licences and current paperwork, and nothing here says otherwise. As an offer, it fails the only test this site applies: can you find out what you are being promised before you commit to it? You cannot. The amount is private until you have an account, the mystery box has no published odds, and the largest figure attached to it in public came from somebody other than OKX. Add a cap nobody discloses, a budget that can empty, a claim you can miss, and a reward priced at the moment it lands, and there is no version of this you can plan around. If you came for a bonus, take one that prints its number on the page.
