Instacart deep dive

The Instacart credit did not arrive. Here is which rule caught you.

Terms examined Jul 27, 2026 6 min read Pays in credit, not cash

Credit, not cash. Handed over in pieces, never in one lump. Every piece over its own $35 minimum at a single retailer. And nothing at all to the referrer until a delivery is actually fulfilled. Those are the four rules Instacart built the referral out of, and your credit is almost certainly sitting behind one of them, not lost.

The two-minute check, in order

  1. Were you expecting cash? The terms say the code has no cash value. It is a discount, not a payment.
  2. Were you expecting one lump? One redemption can produce several coupons, spent on separate orders.
  3. Did each order clear $35 at one retailer? The minimum is per coupon, not per account.
  4. Did the delivery actually complete? The referrer's reward is tied to a fulfilled order.
  5. Did you look in the right place? Credits and coupons live under Credits, promos, and gift cards, not in your bank.

Which one caught you, and what to do

Not a bug, the design 1. You were waiting for cash

Instacart's referral terms say:

Quoted from Instacart

“Code has no cash value.”
Referral Terms and Conditions read July 27, 2026

The same terms describe the mechanism: Discount will be applied to the total purchase price for all non-alcohol products. There is no transfer, no payout, no balance you can move anywhere. Instacart's credits help page: You can’t transfer credit to another Instacart account.

What to do: stop looking at your bank statement and start looking at a checkout screen. The reward becomes visible as a smaller order total when you build a qualifying cart. If you hoped to convert it into money, that was never on the table, and no support ticket will change it.

Nothing wrong, keep going 2. You were waiting for one lump

The second most common case. Instacart's help page describes the reward like this:

Quoted from Instacart

“For each referral, they’ll get up to $40 credit to use across their first two orders, and you’ll get $10 credit once their delivery is complete.”
Referrals help article read July 27, 2026

The terms explain the plumbing behind that sentence:

Quoted from Instacart

“Redemption of a referral promo code may result in multiple coupons which users can redeem on separate, individual orders.”
Referral Terms and Conditions read July 27, 2026

A reader who redeems a code, shops once, and sees a discount smaller than the headline has collected the first coupon. The rest is still in the account, waiting for a second qualifying order.

What to do: open Credits, promos, and gift cards in your account and count what is still listed. If a second coupon is sitting there, place a second qualifying order before it expires and it will apply itself.

Instacart marks the headline figure with an asterisk on its own help page: *Referral credit amounts can vary. Treat $40 as the current ceiling, and read the number your own account shows at sign-up.

Fixable on the next order 3. Your order missed $35, or crossed two retailers

Quoted from Instacart

“Each coupon may only be used in one order with only one retailer for an order of $35 or more.”
Referral Terms and Conditions read July 27, 2026

That sentence does three things at once. The $35 minimum attaches to the coupon, not to the account, so two coupons mean two separate $35 orders and roughly $70 of shopping to collect the full amount. The order must sit with one retailer, so a cart assembled from two stores does not qualify no matter what it totals. And a $34 order simply will not trigger the coupon.

  • Groceries you have to buy to collect both couponsRoughly $70
  • Credit waiting at the end of itUp to $40

Two coupons, two separate $35 orders. The minimum attaches to the coupon, not to the account.

Two further exclusions in the same paragraph matter here. The discount applies to the total purchase price for all non-alcohol products, and the terms state that the Code cannot be applied to alcohol products or restaurant orders.

What to do: build a single-retailer cart comfortably over $35 in items, leave alcohol out of the calculation, and confirm the discount line is showing before you place the order.

One thing Instacart does not define: the referral terms say an order of $35 or more without stating whether that $35 is measured on items alone or on the total after fees, taxes and tip. We could not find a sentence anywhere in Instacart's published terms that settles it, so we are not going to invent one. Build the cart above $35 in items and the ambiguity stops mattering.

Depends who you are 4. The delivery was cancelled, or never completed

This one bites referrers hardest. The terms state it as a condition of payment:

Quoted from Instacart

“…after the order using the Referrer-provided promo code is fulfilled, the Referrer will receive the reward for each such redemption.”
Referral Terms and Conditions read July 27, 2026

Instacart's help page says the same thing in plainer language: the referrer gets their credit once their delivery is complete. A friend who signs up, builds a cart, and then cancels has produced nothing for either side. And cancellation is not always the customer's decision. Instacart's own cancellation article says:

Quoted from Instacart

“Instacart may cancel or reschedule your order due to shopper availability, out-of-stock items, store hours, or severe weather.”
Cancel or reschedule your order read July 27, 2026

So a referrer can wait patiently for a $10 credit that a thunderstorm quietly cancelled three days ago.

What to do, as the referee: if your order was cancelled before it shipped, your coupon should still be sitting in your account, because nothing was redeemed against a fulfilled order. Check Credits, promos, and gift cards and place a fresh qualifying order. Cancelling late has its own cost: Canceling after a shopper accepted may result in a $15 cancellation fee.

What to do, as the referrer: ask your friend whether the delivery actually completed before you chase anyone. If it did not, there is nothing to chase yet.

Refunds are the genuinely unclear case. Instacart's refunds article says you can self-report problems within 3 days of your pickup or delivery… for a credit or refund, but neither that article nor the referral terms say what happens to a referral coupon on an order that was delivered and then substantially refunded. We could not verify a rule either way, so we are not printing one. If this is your situation, ask support in writing and get the answer in writing.

The quiet fifth case: it did apply, and it applied to less than you thought

Some readers are looking at an order total that fell by less than the coupon's face value. Usually nothing went wrong. Instacart's credits help page sets the boundary:

Quoted from Instacart

“We can’t apply promos or credits toward fees, taxes, tips, or alcohol items due to local laws and regulations.”
Credits and Rewards read July 27, 2026

Its promo-code article adds one more exclusion: Promotions and credits can’t be applied toward fees, taxes, tips, prescriptions, or alcohol due to applicable laws and regulations. Delivery fee, service fee, sales tax and the shopper's tip all sit outside the discountable base.

Two friendlier details from the same article: For credits and gift cards, any remainder goes back to your account for future orders. And if you carry several credits, Credits and rewards with the earliest expiration date automatically applies to your order first.

Three ways it was never yours to begin with

Not every missing credit is recoverable. Three sentences in the referral terms describe situations where nothing was ever going to land.

  • You applied the code after ordering. Code cannot be used retroactively for prior purchases.
  • You and your referrer share a household. Referrals cannot be made to members of the same household or related user accounts.
  • You live in Washington state. Residents of Washington state are not eligible for this offer as a Referrer or Referee.

A fourth, softer one: the clock. Codes expire 90 days after the redemption date or as indicated on the coupon in-app, whichever is earlier. The in-app date can be shorter than 90 days, so read the date printed on the coupon itself. And the terms reserve the broadest right of all: Instacart reserves the right to modify or cancel this offer at any time.

If you are the referrer and your $10 never landed

Run three checks before writing to anyone. First, had you personally ordered on Instacart before sending the invitation? The terms exclude brand-new referrers outright: Users who have not made orders on Instacart are not eligible to send referrals. Second, did your friend's delivery actually complete? Third, did they use your link before their first order?

If all three are clean and the credit is still absent, you have an actual data problem, and you should raise it with dates and order numbers rather than adjectives.

Where to look before you file anything

Instacart puts every credit and coupon in one place. From the app, tap the Account icon, then Credits, promos, and gift cards. On the website, open the menu at the top left and go to the same section. Instacart's refunds article confirms the behaviour: You can see any Instacart credits in the Credits, promos & gift cards section of your Instacart account. Credits will automatically apply during checkout on your next order.

A referral reward may show as a coupon or promotion rather than as a credit balance; both descriptions are Instacart's own. And Refunds that don’t go back to your original payment method appear as promotions, not Credits and rewards, so an unfamiliar promotion on that screen may be a refund, not your referral.

How to write a ticket that actually gets resolved

Support can correct data. It cannot rewrite the terms. So lead with data.

Screenshot the Credits, promos, and gift cards screen first, because it shows what the system believes you hold. Then send one message containing: the date you created the account, the date and order number of each order you placed, the retailer for each order, the item subtotal for each order, and one sentence naming which coupon you believe should have applied and why. If you are the referrer, add your friend's delivery date and the fact that it completed.

A ticket built like that gets read. Check the live wording while you wait: Instacart's referral terms and its promotion-code help page are the two documents that decide the answer.
