Membership cancellationLA Fitness counts the postmark, not the delivery, and it tells you to get a receipt.
Miss it by mail and you may be billed once more, but the same page promises that billing back. Both halves quoted below.
Three routes, one address
| Online, via your account | Fastest; email possible in some states |
|---|---|
| In person, any club front desk | Same day, ask for a copy |
| Mail to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619 | Counts by postmark; use certified |
Quoted from LA Fitness
“Most club memberships are month-to-month and may be cancelled at any time (1) by mailing written notice of cancellation to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619) (we recommend registered or certified mail and keeping a record for your files); (2) in person at a club (please see the front desk); or (3) via your online account or as may otherwise be provided in your agreement (for example, depending on your state of enrollment, you may be able to cancel by email).”
Two details are easy to miss in that sentence. The stray parenthesis after the ZIP code is LA Fitness’s own typography, not ours. And the certified-mail line is remarkable: gyms are not in the habit of telling members how to make a cancellation provable, and this one does, in its own instructions. Take the advice.
The deadline, and the refund promise attached to it
As published by LA Fitness on its Membership Questions page, read August 19, 2026.
Quoted from LA Fitness
“A mailed cancellation form postmarked at least 5 business days before your next billing date should result in no further billings. If notice is postmarked within 5 business days, you may be billed once more. If this occurs, we will refund that additional billing.”
Note the difference from Planet Fitness, whose rule is about the day the club receives notice. A postmark rule means the postal delay is LA Fitness’s problem; a receipt rule means it is yours. If you hold memberships at both, do not let the friendlier rule here teach you a habit that costs you there.
One honest caveat: the refund sentence sits under the words should result
and speaks
to the mailed form. Keep your certificate and a copy of what you sent, because that
promise is only as strong as your proof of the postmark.
The initial-term trap
Quoted from LA Fitness
“If your membership, personal training or other agreement has an initial term of three months or more, and (1) you’re outside of your initial term, you may also cancel at any time as provided above; (2) you’re still within the initial term, your cancellation will be effective when the initial term ends; and (3) you wish to cancel before the end of the initial term, a termination fee will apply.”
Three things live in that sentence: outside the term you cancel freely; inside it, your cancellation waits for the term to end on its own; and cutting it short costs a termination fee whose amount the page never states. Personal training agreements are explicitly included, and they are the ones that most often carry long initial terms. If a fee is quoted to you, ask to see where your agreement states the amount.
What the page does not tell you
| The termination fee amount | Not stated |
|---|---|
| Which states allow email cancellation | Not stated |
| How long a refund takes to arrive | Not stated |
Before you send anything
- Find your billing date and count 5 business days back. Business days, not calendar days: a weekend in the middle moves your real deadline earlier.
- Check your agreement for an initial term. That decides whether you are cancelling now or scheduling a cancellation for term end.
- Prefer the online route if your account offers it. It produces a dated confirmation without a trip to the post office.
- If you mail it, do exactly what LA Fitness suggests. Registered or certified, and keep the record with a copy of the notice itself.
Questions people actually ask
Where do I find the cancellation form?
The page describes written notice of cancellation
and a mailed cancellation
form
; your agreement typically includes the form, and the front desk can print one. A plain
signed letter carrying your name, membership number and the request is written notice too.
Can I cancel at any club, or only my home club?
The published route says in person at a club (please see the front desk)
, without
restricting it to the club you joined.
What happens to personal training sessions?
Training agreements are separate agreements with their own initial terms, and the same sentence that governs membership terms covers them. Cancel both explicitly if you have both.
I was billed after cancelling. Now what?
If your postmark fell inside the 5-day window, that billing is the one LA Fitness states it will refund. Point at the sentence, provide the postmark proof, and ask for the refund in writing.
