Hopper pays in travel credit that only spends inside Hopper, and will not say how much.
You are paid, in Hopper’s words, "once the friend successfully installs the Hopper app and claims their reward", not when they book a trip. Almost every other program on this site makes you wait for a completed purchase. What you receive, though, is money that only exists inside Hopper, and the figures circulating elsewhere ($10, $25, ten percent off) come from sites that contradict each other and cite nothing.

What Carrot Cash is, and where it will not go
Carrot Cash is Hopper’s own in-app currency: money that exists only inside the Hopper app and can only be spent on Hopper bookings. Whether your referral arrives as Carrot Cash or as the newer hotel reward, this is the machinery it sits in.
One unit is one dollar, and that is where the resemblance to money ends. Hopper defines a unit of Carrot Cash as "equivalent to applying 1 US dollar toward the same purchase". It also states that it "may not be transferred, redeemed, or exchanged for cash, and has no cash value", and calls it outright "a temporary incentive".
It expires after six months of not being used. Hopper’s wording is flat: "Carrot Cash will expire if you do not use it for 6 months." If your next trip is more than six months out, this reward may not survive to meet it.
It only works on the part of a booking you pay up front. Hopper can only apply it "towards the pay-now portion of an eligible booking", meaning the amount you pay Hopper today. Book a hotel or a car on a pay-later rate and Hopper says plainly you "will not be able to use your Carrot Cash". It also does not touch extras such as insurance or cancellation protection.
You do not get to choose how much of it to spend. Hopper states that "you cannot choose how much of your Carrot Cash to redeem on your booking." The app decides. So a balance you were saving for a $400 hotel can be partly eaten by a $60 booking you make first. Leftover value does stay in your wallet.
One airline is carved out by name. "Carrot Cash cannot be applied towards flight bookings with United Airlines." No other carrier is named. It also cannot be combined with other discounts when booking cars or homes.
Do this, in this order
- Check that the referral feature exists in both apps first. Hopper requires that "Both of you must have access to the referral feature in your Hopper app." It is not universal.
- Be genuinely new, and be first. Referrals "will not apply to existing Hopper customers or accounts", so an old account you forgot about ends this before it starts. Hopper adds "You must be the first friend of your referral", so do not be the fourth person to claim the same code.
- Install the app and use the "Redeem a code" button. Hopper spells out the sequence: create your own new account, install the app, and tap Redeem a code. This is a phone-only program.
- Give it 48 hours, then check your Hopper Wallet. That is the stated loading time for the discount to appear.
- Book the thing you were going to book anyway, and book it prepaid. The credit only bites on the pay-now portion, so a pay-later hotel rate quietly makes your reward unusable.
- Use it within six months, and use it on the biggest eligible booking you have. The expiry is measured from your last use, and you cannot control how much gets applied to any one purchase.
What Hopper does not publish, and we will not invent
The amount. No figure appears on any Hopper help page we were able to read, on either side of the referral.
The caps, the clawback rules, and the program end date. These would live in Hopper’s full terms of service, and that page loads its text through scripts that returned nothing readable to us. So we do not know whether there is a limit on how many friends you can refer. Assume Hopper reserves the usual rights, and check the app.
Any expiry on the newer hotel reward. The six-month rule is documented for Carrot Cash. If what you receive is the hotel discount instead, Hopper does not state a shelf life for it anywhere we could find. Treat it as perishable too.
A date on the rules. None of Hopper’s help pages carries a "last updated" stamp.
Is it worth your time?
If you already book through Hopper, take it: the friend’s side pays out on an app install rather than a purchase, and credit against a hotel you were booking anyway is a genuine saving. If you do not use Hopper, this is not a reason to start. You would be signing up for an app to receive an unstated amount of money that only spends in that app, cannot be moved, dies in six months of quiet, and gets applied in amounts the app chooses. Book the trip you wanted, and let the credit be a small bonus.
