Retail return policy

Home Depot doesn't have one return window. It has five.

Read Jul 30, 2026 6 min read
48 hours the window for a major appliance, and it requires a phone call, not just a walk-in. It is the shortest deadline we have found on any policy page.

The 48 hours run from delivery, not from the day you get around to unboxing. Everything else on the site runs on a longer clock: 90 days standard, 30 for furniture and electronics, 7 for portable air conditioners, and up to 365 if you paid with a Home Depot card.

Five windows, one store

90 daysStandard, with proof of purchase
30 daysFurniture, tractors, electronics, paint sprayers, gas-powered tools
7 daysDehumidifiers, gas pressure washers, portable A/C, gas generators
48 hoursMajor appliances only, phone call required
365 daysAny category above, if paid with a Home Depot card

Quoted from Home Depot

“Most merchandise can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase to The Home Depot unless noted below.”
Return Policy read July 30, 2026

The 30-day tier catches anything with a motor, a screen, or a cushion:

Quoted from Home Depot

“Furniture, Tractors, Framing & Roofing Compressors, Consumer Electronics (televisions and computers), Paint Sprayers and Gas Powered Items in the following categories: Trimmers, Blowers, Chain Saws, Mowers, Outdoor Augers, Tillers, Chippers and Log Splitters.”
Return Policy read July 30, 2026

The 7-day tier is mostly seasonal appliances that ship gas or refrigerant:

Quoted from Home Depot

“Dehumidifiers, Gas Pressure Washers, Air Conditioners (Window and Portable), Gas Generators (other than whole house and stationary generators).”
Return Policy read July 30, 2026

Gas-powered items are timed short for a reason stated elsewhere on the same page: “Due to safety hazards, items that use flammable liquids or gases cannot be returned through the mail, even if the item has been drained of these materials.”

The appliance sequence, in order

Before you accept delivery Inspect the appliance and refuse it on the spot if it is damaged.
Within 48 hours of delivery, excluding weekends Call Customer Solutions at 1-800-455-3869 to report damage or defects. Applies even to unopened, factory-sealed units
After 48 hours No published route to return it. Nothing done after this changes it

As published by Home Depot on its Major Appliances Return Policy section, read July 30, 2026.

Quoted from Home Depot

“For Major Appliances (including refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, and over-the-range or built-in microwaves), contact Customer Solutions at 1-800-455-3869 within 48 hours of delivery (excluding weekends) for any damage or defects. All returns in these categories, inclusive of unopened, unused and factory-sealed items, must be made within 48 hours.”

Same product, different card, different clock

The card in your wallet can triple the return window on an identical purchase:

  • Same item, paid any other way90 days
  • Same item, paid with a Home Depot card365 days

Both windows are stated on the same Home Depot return policy page, read July 30, 2026.

Quoted from Home Depot

“If your purchase was made with The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, The Home Depot Pro Xtra Credit Card (Commercial Revolving Charge), or The Home Depot Commercial Account, you have 365 days from date of purchase to receive a full refund… While most plants are returnable within 90 days, perennials, trees, roses, and shrubs have a 1-year guarantee and can be returned for store credit.”
Return Policy read July 30, 2026

The 365-day rule does not override the shorter tiers above it: a major appliance paid for with the card still falls under the 48-hour rule, not the year-long one.

Two changes already written into the page

Home Depot has no single “last updated” stamp, but two dated rule changes sit inside the exceptions themselves, on either side of our read date (July 30, 2026):

Halloween & Holiday decor, 30-day ruleEffective July 7, 2026, already in force
Custom Thresholds exclusionEffective Aug 3, 2026, not yet in force

Quoted from Home Depot

“Effective as of July 7, 2026, Halloween decor and Holiday decor must be returned to The Home Depot® within thirty (30) days - unused and with proof of purchase - to receive a full refund.”
Return Policy read July 30, 2026

The second change sits inside the non-returnable list, under Custom and Made-to-Order Products:

Quoted from Home Depot

“Custom Thresholds included as of August 3rd, 2026”
Return Policy read July 30, 2026

If you are reading this after August 3, 2026, that exclusion is live; if you bought a custom threshold before it took effect, it is worth asking the store which rule applied to your purchase date.

The 15% fee, and it is narrow

Quoted from Home Depot

“Special Order returns or cancellations may be subject to a 15% restocking fee and must be returned to the same store where the purchase was made.”
Return Policy read July 30, 2026

That fee is scoped to Special Orders.

No receipt? Bring ID, and expect store credit

Quoted from Home Depot

“We require a valid driver's license or government-issued photo identification for non-receipted returns and returns generated from purchases made with The Home Depot store credits. The Home Depot uses a third-party refund verification system. All returns are subject to verification system approval.”
Return Policy read July 30, 2026

Quoted from Home Depot

“Returns made without a valid proof or purchase may be refunded as a Store Credit at the lowest advertised price.”
Return Policy read July 30, 2026

Lowest advertised price, not the price you paid: if the item went on sale between purchase and return, the refund is calculated off the lower number.

Plants get their own year. Perennials, trees, roses and shrubs carry a 1-year guarantee separate from the 90-day plant window, paid out as store credit, not a refund to your original payment method.

What Home Depot does not say

Restocking fee on ordinary merchandise? Not stated
Extended window for holiday gifts? Not stated (decor rule above only shortens it)
Flat-dollar return shipping fee?Not stated
Lifetime cap on non-receipted returns? Not stated

Plenty of shoppers assume a big-box retailer has a holiday grace period. Halloween and Holiday decor got a shorter window instead, and nothing on the page extends any deadline for gifts.

Before you head to the store

  1. Check which of the five windows applies. A gas generator and a refrigerator are both "appliances" in conversation, and they run on 7 days and 48 hours respectively.
  2. Bring the receipt if you have it. Without one, you will need photo ID and the refund may land as store credit at the lowest advertised price.
  3. Call ahead for a major appliance. 1-800-455-3869, and the clock is 48 hours from delivery, weekends excluded from the count.

Questions people actually ask

What is Home Depot's standard return window?

90 days with proof of purchase, unless the item falls into one of the shorter or longer tiers above.

Why would the same product get 90 days for one shopper and 365 for another?

The card decides it. Pay with a Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, Pro Xtra Card, or Commercial Account and the window stretches to 365 days on the same item.

How long do I have to return a major appliance?

48 hours from delivery, weekends excluded from the count, and a call to Customer Solutions is required. It applies even to a unit still in its factory-sealed box.

Are the Halloween decor and Custom Thresholds changes already in effect?

Only the Halloween/Holiday decor rule, effective July 7, 2026. Custom Thresholds becomes non-returnable August 3, 2026, which had not arrived when we read this page.

Does Home Depot charge a restocking fee?

Only 15%, and only on Special Orders. No fee is stated for ordinary merchandise.
