ExpressVPN's referral adds 30 free days for you, but only when ExpressVPN itself bills the subscription, not Apple or Google.
This is not a free trial. ExpressVPN says it does not currently offer a 30-day free trial, and that your payment method is charged at the time of purchase. What it has instead is a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time users, and a 3-day free trial on iOS and Android only.
What pays what
| You, signing up through a customer's referral link | 30 days free |
|---|---|
| A friend who is already an active customer | Nothing |
| A past customer coming back through a link | 30 days, special offers excluded |
Users whose subscriptions are billed through the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store are not eligible for the Refer a Friend program.
Do this, in this order
- Price the plan before the reward. For Basic, the order page we read says: “Billed $419.72 $83.72 for the first 28 Months. Then autorenews at $99.95 annually.” The first figure is the undiscounted price: the page lists total savings of $336.00, and $419.72 minus $336.00 is $83.72. Afterwards, $99.95 divided by 12 months is about $8.33 a month, against the $2.99 a month shown when we read it. Advanced renews at $119.95 annually and Express Pro at $199.95.
- Get the link from a customer ExpressVPN bills directly. They sign in, select Refer Friends, and copy a unique referral link. A customer billed through Apple or Google is not eligible, and a customer on a free trial cannot refer until the trial becomes a paid subscription.
- Sign up on ExpressVPN's website, not inside the app. In-app purchases are outside both the referral program and the guarantee.
- Write down two dates on the day you buy. The guarantee lasts exactly 30 days from the order time: ExpressVPN's own example is an order at 8 a.m. on July 1, refundable until 8 a.m. on July 31. The second date is the renewal. “If your subscription renews yet you did not intend for it to do so, you have a guaranteed 14 days from the moment your subscription renews to get a full refund.”
The refund has its own fine print
It works once. “ExpressVPN's money-back guarantee is for first-time users only. Users who have previously received a refund, or payment accounts which have previously been refunded, are ineligible.” The rule follows the payment account as well as the person.
Some purchases are outside it. The Terms of Service say the guarantee does not apply to renewal purchases or to subscriptions bought with redemption codes such as gift cards. They also say refunds are generally processed within seven days, and that accounts are for people aged at least 18 or the local age of majority.
What ExpressVPN does not publish
There is no referral terms document in what we read. The rules come from an FAQ on the Refer a Friend page and a help article dated May 10, 2026. The Terms of Service, which carry the line “Last updated: July 27, 2026”, do not mention the referral program at all. No end date is stated.
How the new customer's 30 days are delivered. The page says only that the friend gets 30 days free on signing up.
Which special offers are excluded. The exclusion appears in the answer about referring a past customer, with no definition. Every plan on the order page we read was marked with a discount, from Save 73% to Save 80%, and nothing says whether those count.
Is it worth your time?
Take the link if you had already decided to buy, because it costs nothing and buying without one earns no days. Do not let it make the decision. The reward is roughly $3 of value, and the number that matters far more is the renewal: Basic goes from $83.72 for 28 months to $99.95 for every year after that.
To only try the service, the first-time 30-day guarantee on a website purchase needs no link.
