Chipotle Rewards gives a new member free chips and guac, but only after a $5 minimum purchase, and every reward it hands out expires 60 days after it lands unless you use it.
The Rewards page opens with the offer and a footnote directly under the join button: “*5 min purchase required.” No dollar sign is printed, so the footnote can be misread as five minutes; we read it as a $5 minimum purchase. Further down the same page repeats the offer as free Chips & Guac with the words “(purchase required)”. It is a free side with an order, not a free meal. The same page's points menu prices Chips at 350 points and Guac at 500.
What pays what
| Joining and making a $5 minimum purchase | Free chips and guac |
|---|---|
| Each $1 of a qualifying purchase | 10 points |
| 85 or 350 points | A side tortilla, or chips |
| 400 or 500 points | A fountain drink, or guac |
| 700 or 815 points | Double protein, or 50% off an entrée |
| 1,625 or 1,775 points | An entrée, or an entrée and chips |
| Referring a friend | $0, no program |
At 10 points per $1, a free entrée at 1,625 points takes $162.50 of qualifying purchases. The Terms leave taxes, tips, donations and fees, including delivery and service fees, out of every purchase total, and credit no points on alcohol or gift cards. Chipotle may substantially increase the points a reward needs, or withdraw a reward.
Do this, in this order
- Join with an email you read. Registration asks for your name, a password, your email address, mobile number and birthday. The email is “required in order to receive all eligible Rewards”. Text messages are optional. You must be 13 or older and a legal resident of the 50 states or Washington, D.C.
- Make the first order count. Present your account at the register or be logged in when ordering online; points start only from the first purchase where your account is shown. Spend at least $5 on it; the Terms leave tax and fees out of purchase totals, so do not rely on them to reach $5.
- Watch the dates. The page says points can take 24 to 48 hours to be added. Each reward then lasts 60 days, and the account is limited to three qualifying purchases a day.
- Keep one account, and use it once a year. Points expire after 365 days with no qualifying purchase. You may have only one account, and Chipotle may close extra ones.
In the event that your participation in Chipotle Rewards is terminated, then all accumulated points and Rewards in your account are void.
What Chipotle does not publish
The minimum in plain money. The footnote says 5, not $5, and does not say whether it is measured before or after tax. The Terms, which exclude tax and fees from qualifying purchases, do not mention the sign-up offer at all.
A referral program. The Terms have none, and they call your Rewards card and code personal, not to be shared with family, friends or others.
The student program. The Rewards page points college students to Chipotle U, which checks student status through ID.me. Its page promises “SCORE 1,000 POINTS INSTANTLY WHEN YOU JOIN” and “12 POINTS PER DOLLAR (VS. 10).” Its Full Terms link goes to the same Rewards Terms, which never mention Chipotle U. Its FAQ also says points expire “if your account is inactive for six months”, while the Terms say “Rewards points expire after 365 days of account inactivity”. The Terms bind, but a purchase every six months satisfies both. Canadian residents, outside Quebec, are covered by separate terms.
Is it worth your time?
For anyone who already eats at Chipotle, yes. Sign up before your next order, spend the $5 you were going to spend anyway, and the chips and guac follow. The points build toward free food at 10 per $1, and the monthly drops cost nothing.
It is not worth a special trip, and it does not pay for referrals. The two things that waste it are letting a reward sit past 60 days and going a year without a purchase.
