Kindle Unlimited still gives a new member a free trial, then $11.99 a month plus tax that continues without notice, and every title you borrowed is removed the day the membership ends.
Amazon's news site says: “Check your eligibility for a free Kindle Unlimited trial by visiting the sign-up page”, and the sign-up page's own title reads “Sign up to Kindle Unlimited for a Free Trial”. The same news page gives the price: “In the U.S., a Kindle Unlimited membership costs $11.99 a month plus taxes.” What no public page gives is the trial's length. Without a signed-in session the sign-up box showed us an error and no length, so we do not print a number of days. The help page is clear about what comes after: “At the end of your free trial, you're automatically converted to a monthly paid subscription plan.”
What pays what
| An eligible new member, signing in on the sign-up page | A free trial, then $11.99 a month plus tax |
|---|---|
| What the membership holds | Up to 20 titles at a time, no due dates |
| A Prime member without Kindle Unlimited | A curated selection only, not the catalog |
| A new member's sign-up bonus or referral reward | None |
| Cancelling partway through a paid month | No refund, access to the billing date |
Twelve months at $11.99 is $143.88 before tax. The catalog is not fixed: “From time to time, we may add or remove titles from the program and we make no guarantee as to the availability of specific titles or the minimum number of titles available.” A gift or bundle membership is prepaid, and “You'll not receive a partial refund for unused months for a prepaid (gift or bundle) Kindle Unlimited membership”.
Do this, in this order
- Sign in and check your eligibility on the sign-up page. The Terms of Use say Amazon offers trial memberships to certain customers, and reserves the right to accept or refuse membership.
- Know what you have agreed to before the trial runs out. “Unless you notify us before a charge that you want to cancel or do not want to auto renew, you understand your Kindle Unlimited membership will automatically continue and you authorize us (without notice to you, unless required by applicable law) to collect the then-applicable membership fees and any taxes, using any payment method we have on record for you.”
- Do not expect to pause a trial. Paying members can pause for one month from the end of a billing cycle, and the subscription resumes on its own. The cancellation page says: “You can't pause your subscription while on a free trial, or promotional period.” On a trial the choice is continue or cancel.
- Cancel at amazon.com/kucentral before the trial ends if you do not want to pay. The Terms of Use say: “Trial members may at any time (through https://www.amazon.com/kucentral) choose not to continue to paid membership at the end of the trial period.” If you signed up through Google Play Billing, cancel in the Play Store instead.
- Once you are paying, treat each month as spent. The clause below settles whether cancelling early saves anything. It does not: you keep access to the end of the period either way, and nothing comes back.
If you cancel your membership, (i) you will not receive a refund of any membership fees already paid, and (ii) you will continue to have access to your membership benefits until the end of your subscription period.
What Amazon does not publish, and what it keeps for itself
The length of the trial, and the price, on the pages that matter. The Terms of Use, which carry the line “Last updated: November 19, 2024”, say the membership fees are stated in the Help pages; the help pages we read do not state them. The $11.99 figure comes from Amazon's news site. The trial's length appears nowhere we could read without signing in. Expect both on the sign-up page once you are logged in, and read that page before you click.
The right to end it, and to change it. “We may terminate your membership at our discretion without notice.” If Amazon does, it gives a prorated refund for the days remaining, except where it decides the termination relates to a breach of the Terms, fraud, misuse or harm to its interests. Price changes are gentler: “We may change the Kindle Unlimited membership fee from time to time by notifying you of the change and effective date before it takes effect.”
A referral program for this product. There is none for Kindle Unlimited itself. A website's Amazon Associates link changes nothing for you: no discount and no longer trial. This page carries no such link.
Is it worth your time?
For a reader with a few catalog titles lined up, yes. The trial costs nothing, you can borrow 20 titles at once with no due dates, and Kindle Unlimited reads on any phone, tablet or computer through the free Kindle app, so a Kindle device is not required. Sign in, read the trial length on the sign-up page, and put the end date in your calendar the same day.
Think harder if you expected to keep the books, or if you tend to forget subscriptions. The Terms of Use let Amazon keep collecting the fee from any card on file without notice, fees already paid are not refunded, and the shelf empties the day the membership ends. If your reading is a book every few months, buying the book is cheaper than the membership that lends it.
