Venmo's FAQ promises $5. Venmo's terms promise nothing, and stopped at the end of 2024.
Open the terms page, which is the document that actually governs the program, and the $5 is not in it. It names no dollar figure anywhere, referring instead to "the reward amount as defined in the Notification", meaning a message Venmo sends inside the app. And it scopes the whole program to referrals successfully completed by December 31, 2024. Neither page carries a last-updated date. So the honest position is that $5 is what the marketing says, not what anybody has promised you.
- What the referral FAQ advertises, for each side$5
- What the terms page that governs the program namesNo amount
One program, two live Venmo pages. The FAQ carries a figure. The operative document does not.
What pays what, and according to whom
| The FAQ, for you and for your friend | $5 each |
|---|---|
| The FAQ, most one referrer can ever collect | 10 rewards, $50 total |
| The terms, on how much the reward is | No amount stated |
| The terms, on when the program runs to | Dec 31, 2024 |
| Anyone who has ever had a Venmo account, or sent or received a personal payment | Not eligible |
| A link posted publicly, on any website | Referrals void |
| This page, now and permanently | No Venmo link |
Do this, in this order
- Ask a friend for the link, privately, and only a friend. A message, not a forum post. The terms limit sharing to family and personal friends or acquaintances, and a link you found in public has already broken the rule that keeps it valid.
- Check whether you are new by Venmo's definition, not yours. The terms describe an eligible friend as someone who has never had a Venmo account, or who has never sent or received a personal payment. A long-dormant account you never used may still leave the door open. One where you have sent money does not.
- Ask for a freshly created link. The 14-day window runs from the moment the referral link was created, not from the moment you sign up. A link your friend generated a fortnight ago may be dead before it reaches you, and you would never know why.
- Link a bank account, credit card or debit card first. The terms require it, and it needs to be in place before the payment that qualifies you.
- Send a personal payment of $5 or more, funded by that bank account or card. Use Pay or Request to send at least $5 to another person. The FAQ specifies it must be funded by a bank account or card, so do not assume a payment made out of an existing Venmo balance will count.
- Expect two weeks, and be relaxed about four. The terms say the reward arrives within fourteen days but may take up to thirty. The FAQ says much the same.
- Do not confuse this with Venmo's card referrals. Venmo runs separate referral programs for its debit card and its credit card, each with its own help article and its own terms. Different offers, different rewards, different rules, and this page is not about them.
The fine print that decides whether anything arrives
The governing terms lapsed nineteen months ago. They cover referrals successfully completed by December 31, 2024 at 11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Either the program is now running under terms Venmo has not published, or the FAQ is marketing that outlived its contract.
The amount is set per campaign, not by the terms. "The reward amount as defined in the Notification" means Venmo decides the figure and tells you inside the app. Whatever your app says is the only number that applies to you.
The referrer's ceiling is low. Ten rewards per referrer, one per person referred, a maximum of $50 in total by the FAQ's own arithmetic.
Check the article you are reading is the right one. A Venmo help URL that circulated widely for this program now serves Venmo Credit Card billing content instead. The current P2P referral pages are the FAQ and terms linked below.
Is it worth your time?
If you were joining Venmo regardless and a friend sends you a fresh link, take it. Linking a card and sending someone $5 is not work, and $5 back for it is fine. What you should not do is treat this as an offer to chase, because there is no offer to chase: the binding document expired at the end of 2024 and never named a figure in the first place. If a bonus is what you are after, the money apps below pay more and will at least tell you what they owe you.
