Spotify's $0 month is a real month of Premium Individual, offered once to anyone who has never held or trialed a Spotify paid plan, and it becomes $12.99 a month the day it ends.
The Premium page puts the offer in one line: “$0 for 1 month, then $12.99 per month after. Offer only available if you haven't tried Premium before.” The banner at the top adds “Premium Individual only.” Premium Student has its own $0 month, then $6.99 a month, and the page says the plan “currently includes access to Hulu plan on us, subject to eligibility.” Premium Duo at $18.99 a month and Premium Family at $21.99 a month show a price and a Get button, and no trial.
What pays what
| A new subscriber who has never held or trialed any Spotify paid plan, choosing Premium Individual | 1 month for $0, then $12.99 a month |
|---|---|
| A verified student at a US Title IV institution who has never tried Premium | 1 month for $0, then $6.99 a month, with a Hulu plan included |
| Premium Duo, for two people at one address | $18.99 a month, no trial shown |
| Premium Family, for up to six people at one address | $21.99 a month, no trial shown |
| Anyone who has ever subscribed to, or accepted a trial of, a Spotify paid plan | No trial |
| Cancelling a free trial before the month ends | Premium ends immediately |
The exclusion is wider than the tile suggests. The tile says Premium; the terms say every paid plan: “you must be a new subscriber to any and all Paid Subscriptions and not have subscribed to, or accepted a trial of, a Paid Subscription at any time in the past”. A Duo you joined as a plan member years ago counts. Spotify decides who qualifies “acting reasonably, based on information available to Spotify”.
Do this, in this order
- Check your own history before you expect the $0. If you ever paid for any Spotify plan, or took any trial of one, the terms exclude you unless a trial is advertised for past subscribers. This one is not.
- Be 18, or 13 with a parent's consent, and in the United States. The Terms of Use, last updated September 4, 2026, say: “YOU AFFIRM THAT YOU ARE 18 YEARS OR OLDER TO ENTER INTO THESE TERMS, OR, IF YOU ARE NOT, THAT YOU ARE 13 YEARS OR OLDER AND HAVE OBTAINED PARENTAL OR GUARDIAN CONSENT TO ENTER INTO THESE TERMS.” They also ask you to confirm that “you reside in the United States”. The Student plan is for students at US Title IV accredited institutions, verified through SheerID.
- Pay Spotify itself, with a card. The trial terms say “prepaid cards and Spotify gift cards are not valid forms of payment”, and that “you must provide the payment method above directly to Spotify and not through a third party”, such as a cable or telecommunications provider. A trial started through a third party has to be cancelled through that third party.
- Use the month, and do not switch plans inside it. The clause in the box above ends Premium the moment you cancel a free trial. Joining a Duo or Family plan mid-trial costs the same days another way: “any unused time you've already paid for, including any remaining free or discounted Trial days, under your then-current Paid Subscription will be forfeited”.
- Cancel before the trial ends if you do not want to pay, and expect the charge the next day if you do not. The terms say “the payment method you provided will automatically be charged the then-current recurring price on the first day following the end of the Trial”, and in capitals: “IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO PAY THIS CHARGE, YOU MUST CANCEL BEFORE THE END OF THE TRIAL”. Cancelling once you are paying works differently: “Unless otherwise indicated, cancellation will take effect from the end of the billing period in which you cancel.”
CERTAIN PAID SUBSCRIPTIONS CONTINUE INDEFINITELY AND YOU WILL CONTINUE TO BE CHARGED THE RECURRING SUBSCRIPTION FEE AS ADVERTISED, AND AS AMENDED FROM TIME-TO-TIME, UNTIL YOU CANCEL YOUR ACCOUNT.
What Spotify does not publish, and what it keeps for itself
No end date, and no promise the trial stays. The Premium page prints no closing date. The terms say a trial must be accepted before any advertised expiration date, and that “Spotify reserves the right to modify, suspend or terminate a Trial at any time and for any reason by notice to you and with no liability”. The same document goes further for the plan itself: “We may withdraw or suspend a Paid Subscription, in whole or in part, at any time and for any reason.”
No refund for a forgotten month. The Paid Subscription Terms say when the $12.99 lands and how to cancel. We found no sentence offering money back for a renewal you did not mean to keep. The Terms of Use promise a prorated refund only if Spotify itself permanently discontinues a plan you prepaid for.
Whether Duo and Family get a trial. The banner says “Premium Individual only.” The Duo and Family tiles show a price and no $0 month. The terms allow trials of household plans, but the page we read offers none. Both plans require that everyone on them live at one address, verified at activation and again when Spotify asks.
No referral program, and two pages that do not load. Spotify's referral and affiliates addresses return its not-found page, headed “This page is out of tune”, so there is no link for anyone to share and none for this site to carry. A support article on free trials returned the same page, and the address for Premium usage terms answered “This page got tripped up”. The Paid Subscription Terms carry no date of their own; the Terms of Use say “Last Updated: September 4, 2026”.
Is it worth your time?
If you qualify, yes: a month of Premium for $0 is what it says, with no code to hunt for and no friend to ask. The decision is what happens on the last day. Twelve months at $12.99 is $155.88, charged until you cancel, at a fee the terms let Spotify amend. If you would not pay that on purpose, cancel on the final day of the trial, not before it and not after it.
If you are a verified student, the $6.99 plan is the better door: the same $0 month, then $83.88 a year at twelve months of $6.99, with a Hulu plan attached while Spotify keeps offering it. The discount runs in twelve-month periods, each needing re-verification, up to three more after the first; when it ends, the terms move you to the full Individual price. If you have ever had a Spotify paid plan, there is nothing here for you, and no referral to earn from anyone else.
