River pays $5 quickly. The $100 on the label costs you $10,000 of buying.
River’s own terms carry two more thresholds above that one. Another $15 each at $1,000 of buying, and another $80 each at $10,000, for a maximum of $100 per friend, per side. You can reach those thresholds with one purchase or a dozen.
What pays what
| New user buys $100 of bitcoin | $5 each side |
|---|---|
| New user reaches $1,000 of buying | +$15 each side |
| New user reaches $10,000 of buying | +$80 each side |
| Running total at the top tier | $100 each side |
| Bitcoin bought with cash from selling bitcoin | Does not count |
| Anyone who already has a River account | $0 |
| Anything bought after day 180 | $0 |
The tiers are cumulative, not separate prizes, so $10,000 of buying pays $100 in total and not $100 on top of the earlier steps. River caps the reward at $100 per friend but puts no limit on how many friends you refer.
- Bitcoin you have to buy to reach the top tier$10,000
- What River pays each side for it$100
The tiers are cumulative, and the whole ladder has to be climbed inside 180 days of account creation.
Do this, in this order
- Create the account straight from the referral link. River pays only for friends who do not already have a River account, and the terms are specific that the friend must sign up using the unique referral link. If you have already opened an account without one, River says you can still apply a code afterwards by asking its support team.
- Link a bank account and fund it with dollars. Only bitcoin bought with cash from a linked bank account earns a reward. Money that came from selling bitcoin inside River is invisible to the program.
- Buy $100 of bitcoin to collect the first $5. One purchase or several, it makes no difference. If you intend to go further, know that the exchange rate for your reward is fixed at the moment you cross a threshold, not at the moment the bitcoin lands in your account, so the dollar value can drift either way in between.
- Watch the 180-day clock. The reward window starts at account creation and lasts 180 days. Cross a threshold after that and River’s terms say neither party receives anything, which means a friend who was slow can cost you both the whole thing. If you are aiming at $1,000 or $10,000, plan the buying inside the window.
- Let the purchase settle, then wait three business days. River pays no reward until all purchased bitcoin has settled, and the bitcoin is then deposited into your River account roughly three business days after the purchase. If your funding is returned or cannot be processed, the bonus is not paid at all.
The fine print that can still cost you the reward
River does not guarantee a payout at all. The terms state twice that River does not guarantee payout on every account you refer and that receiving payouts is not guaranteed.
Failed funding kills the bonus, not just the buy. If the funds are not received, are returned, or cannot be processed, River says the referral bonus will not be paid. A bounced transfer costs you the reward even if you fix it afterwards.
No referring yourself, and no accounts you control. You cannot refer your own account, or an entity in which you have a stake, and River says it does not pay rewards for duplicate or fraudulent accounts.
If you start sharing your own link, do not buy ads. River prohibits promoting a referral code through paid advertising on River-related keywords, and the penalty is severe: codes are deactivated and every referral produced that way becomes ineligible for payment.
The reward is bitcoin, and the tax is yours. Everything is paid in bitcoin into your River account, so the dollar value moves after it lands. Any gain can be taxable and River does not give tax advice.
The terms can change under you. River reserves the right to change the terms for referring friends at any time. Its help article carries only a relative timestamp rather than a date, so confirm the tiers on River’s own page before you plan around them.
Is it worth your time?
If bitcoin is something you were buying anyway, yes: $5 for a purchase you were making is free money, both sides get the same amount, and River is a straightforward bitcoin-only service. If you are here for the $100, be honest with yourself about the price of admission. That number needs $10,000 of bitcoin bought with your own bank money inside six months, and if that describes you, the $100 was never the point. The two ways people lose this are dull and avoidable: funding with proceeds from selling bitcoin, and letting the 180 days run out.
