HBO Max gives most new customers no free trial and nobody a sign-up reward: you pay $10.99 to $22.99 a month from day one, a yearly plan is paid up front, and a cancelled subscription is not refunded.
The help article on trials puts it this way: “Most HBO Max subscription providers do not offer a free trial to new subscribers. If a subscription plan or promotional offer includes a free trial, you'll see mention of the free trial when you sign up.” The plans page showed us three plans and two bundles, each with a price and no trial. The Terms of Use add: “Trial Subscriptions are limited to new Platform subscribers, unless otherwise specified.” The only price break for a new customer is the student one, verified through UNiDAYS.
What pays what
| Basic With Ads: limited ads, 2 devices at once, Full HD | $10.99 a month or $109.99 a year |
|---|---|
| Standard: 2 devices at once, Full HD, 30 downloads | $18.49 a month or $184.99 a year |
| Premium: 4 devices at once (2 for sports), 4K where available, 100 downloads | $22.99 a month or $229.99 a year |
| Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max Bundle, with ads or without | $21.99 or $34.99 a month |
| Student Basic With Ads, direct-billed, 18+, verified through UNiDAYS | $5.49 a month for up to 12 months |
| A new customer's free trial on any plan we read, or a sign-up or referral reward | None |
| Cancelling partway through a paid month or year | No refund, credit or proration |
Every price is from the plans page on September 25, 2026. Our arithmetic: twelve months of Basic With Ads at $10.99 is $131.88, so $109.99 a year is $21.89 less, which the page rounds to “Save $21”; twelve of Standard is $221.88 against $184.99, a gap of $36.89; twelve of Premium is $275.88 against $229.99, a gap of $45.89. The student price is $5.50 a month under Basic With Ads, and the student page says the discounted subscription “will automatically renew each month for up to 12 months, unless you cancel.”
Do this, in this order
- Read the sign-up screen for the word trial before you enter a card. The help article says a trial's eligibility and length are mentioned at sign-up if one exists, and that if your plan or offer does not include one, you are charged at the time you sign up. The Terms of Use require you to be 18 and to live in the fifty states, D.C. or certain U.S. territories.
- Choose monthly or yearly knowing the yearly is paid up front and stays paid. The clause in the box above covers both. The Terms also say: “New customers may take advantage of any “new customer” promotion only once.”
- Expect a pending amount right after sign-up, and do not mistake it for a charge. The trials article explains: “An authorization hold is temporary and should be removed within 7-10 days, depending on your financial institution's policies.” It reduces your available balance while it lasts.
- Find your billing date in the Subscription section of your account and put it in your calendar. If a trial or promotion does apply to you: “You may not be notified that your Trial Subscription or Promotional Offer is about to end unless such notice is required by applicable law.” The reminder is your job.
- To stop, go to HBOMax.com/subscription and choose Cancel Your Subscription. The cancellation article says: “Cancel your subscription before your next billing date to avoid further charges.” and “Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel your subscription.” If an app store or TV provider bills you, the article sends you to that provider's steps. You stream until the period you paid for ends.
UNLESS REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW, WE DO NOT PROVIDE REFUNDS FOR ANY SUBSCRIPTION; NOR DO WE PROVIDE CREDIT, REFUNDS OR PRORATED BILLING FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS THAT ARE CANCELLED.
Where HBO Max's pages disagree, and what they do not say
The name. On September 25, 2026, max.com sent us to hbomax.com, and every page called the service HBO Max; the footer reads “HBO Max and related elements are property of Home Box Office, Inc.” We keep this page at /max so older links still work.
Whether a trial exists at all. The savings page, in a blurb offering free trailers, says in one line that HBO Max does not have a free trial. The help article says most subscription providers do not offer one, and the Terms of Use describe trials as something providers may offer from time to time. All three are HBO Max's words; the sign-up screen decides.
A cut-off hour. None is published. The help article says before your next billing date; the Terms of Use say cancellation takes effect at the end of the then-current billing period. Treat the day before your billing date as the deadline.
How much warning a price rise gets. Only this: “Your Subscription Provider may change the Subscription Fee to the Platform and will communicate any price changes to you in accordance with applicable law.” No number of days is promised. The Terms of Use carry the line “Last updated: July 9, 2025” and limit profiles to five, with “Authorized Users are limited to members of your household.”
The one refund the help pages allow. On cancelling a base plan: “If you have remaining time on your Extra Member Add-On, you'll get a prorated refund for the remaining days on your add-on.” The base plan itself is not refunded. A referral reward does not exist; HBO Max runs an affiliate program for publishers through Partnerize.
Is it worth your time?
If you want to watch HBO Max this month, pay for this month at $10.99 with ads and cancel from HBOMax.com/subscription before the next billing date. A verified student who wants Basic With Ads should take the $5.49 price; it is half the plan price for up to a year.
Think twice about a yearly plan unless you would pay every month anyway: the saving is $21.89 to $45.89 over the year, and the whole year is paid up front with no refund if you stop. And if the sign-up screen does not mention a trial, HBO Max says you will be charged at the time you sign up.
