Examined Sep 25, 2026 Paid per stay, not for joining No referral terms published No link we may carry

A Marriott Bonvoy referral pays the new member 2,000 points for each of their first five stays, and the terms it links to never mention referrals.

Worth it ifa Marriott Bonvoy member offers to invite you and you expect to stay at Marriott hotels several times. The points cost nothing beyond the stays you would make anyway. Just know that the rules on the page are all the rules there are: no document says which stays count, how long you have, or when the points post.

Up to 10,000 points2,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points for each of up to five stays by a new member who was referred by an existing one

The big number in the headline on Marriott's page is not yours. Your points arrive in pieces: one 2,000-point bonus per stay, for five stays. Joining alone pays nothing. Membership is free, and Marriott's terms add that points have no cash value.

Get the invitation before you open an account. The offer is for new members, and Marriott's loyalty terms open membership only to someone who is not already a member, meaning someone without a Membership Account. If you join on your own first and ask for the invitation afterwards, nothing we read says the referral will still attach to you.

What pays what

You, a referred new member, for each stay2,000 bonus points
You, most in total, after five stays10,000 bonus points
You, for joiningNothing
A sixth stayNo referral bonus
And your friends will earn 2,000 bonus points for each stay, up to five stays. That’s up to 10,000 bonus points total for them.
From Marriott’s Refer a Friend page. Read Sep 25, 2026.

Do this, in this order

  1. Ask the member to send the invitation first. The page has a Send Invites button. Marriott does not publish whether that sends an email, a link or a code, or how long an invitation lasts.
  2. Join from the invitation, with accurate details. Eligibility in the loyalty terms includes giving valid and accurate personal information, not already holding an account, and never having been terminated from the program. Residents of Crimea, Cuba, the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, Iran, North Korea and Syria cannot join.
  3. Check your account after the first stay. Marriott states no posting time. If 2,000 bonus points have not appeared after your first stay, ask Marriott then, not after the fifth.
  4. Do not book extra nights to chase it. The bonus is per stay, not per night, and there is no published rule on whether award stays, short stays or third-party bookings count.
  5. Keep the account alive. Earn, redeem or buy points at least once every 24 months, or the balance goes.

What Marriott does not publish

The referral terms themselves. The page's See Terms and Conditions link opens the Loyalty Program Terms and Conditions. We read the whole document. It never mentions a referral, so the five-stay cap exists only on the marketing page.

An end date, or a date on the rules. The Refer a Friend page prints no expiry. The loyalty terms print no effective date, and they reserve the right to change the program: “Except as otherwise expressly prohibited or limited by applicable laws, the Company has the right to change, limit, modify or cancel the Loyalty Program Rules and Awards, with or without notice, even though such changes may affect the value of Points or Miles, or the ability to obtain certain Awards.”

Which stays count and when points post. Neither is stated anywhere we read.

Tax. “Any tax liability, including disclosure, connected with the receipt or use of Points, Miles or Awards is the sole responsibility of the Member.”

A second program, for publishers. Marriott runs a separate affiliate program through Partnerize. It is not the Refer a Friend offer. Its Affiliate Operating Agreement, which we read on September 25, 2026, has affiliates “agree not to use the Marriott Links in a manner that is, or otherwise include materials on your Web site that are, disparaging of Marriott.” A page that sets out where Marriott falls short cannot accept that.

Keeping the points

“If a Member Account is inactive for twenty-four (24) consecutive months, that Member Account will forfeit all accumulated Points.” Once forfeited, points cannot be reinstated. Separately, the terms let Marriott cancel them outright: “The Company may cancel a Member’s accumulated Points, suspend Loyalty Program benefits, suspend Elite Membership Status, suspend Lifetime Elite Membership Status (which will subsequently also remove protection against the forfeiture of Points should the member become inactive as described in Section 1.6.d.), or cancel a Member’s Account at any time with immediate effect and without written notice, for any reason and in the Company's sole discretion”.

See Marriott’s Refer a Friend pageThe invitation has to come from an existing member.
Read the loyalty termsThe document the page links to. It does not cover referrals.

Is it worth your time?

If you already stay at Marriott hotels and a member offers to invite you, say yes before you create an account. The bonus costs nothing and grows with stays you were going to make, up to 10,000 points after the fifth. The pages we read put no cash value on a point, and neither do we.

If you stay at a Marriott once every few years, the realistic reward is 2,000 points, and a quiet 24 months can take even that. Do not plan a trip around it, and screenshot the offer page when you join, because it is the only written version of the rules.
