All offers / Money apps / Dave
Dave's referral does not pay you money. It raises how much you can borrow.
Both of you borrow, both of you pay it back, and then the reward turns up inside the app as a bigger number. ExtraCash is Dave's cash advance: between $25 and $500 that Dave fronts you and you pay back, with what Dave calls an overdraft fee attached. So the referral reward is permission to borrow more next time, not money in your pocket. You have 60 days to use it, and the boost can be redeemed once per friend, up to five friends.
What pays what
| You, joining, after you take and repay an advance of $25 or more | A bonus Dave states in your offer |
|---|---|
| The friend who referred you, on the same conditions | A bigger next ExtraCash |
| Referring more than five friends | Nothing beyond the fifth |
| A boost you do not use within 60 days | Expires |
| Borrowing but not repaying, on either side | $0 |
| Anyone who has ever been a Dave member before | $0 |
What it costs to hold, and to borrow
Dave publishes its fees clearly, which is to its credit.
| Membership, billed monthly on the day you joined until you cancel | Up to $5 a month |
|---|---|
| Fee on an ExtraCash advance, which Dave calls an overdraft fee | The greater of $5 or 5% |
| Sending an advance to an external debit card, optional | 1.5% |
| Tips, optional, added to what you owe | Your choice |
| Late fees and interest | None |
| Withdrawals at 40,000+ MoneyPass ATMs | $0 |
Put those together on a realistic run. A $100 advance carries a $5 fee, and 1.5% more if you want it on an external debit card immediately. Add a month of membership at up to $5 and you are $10 or so lighter before any tip. Dave charges no interest and no late fees, which genuinely matters, but an advance is repayable on demand and any negative balance is payable in full when Dave asks.
Do this, in this order
- Decide whether you wanted the advance anyway. The only way to collect is for both people to borrow $25 or more and pay it back, so the reward cannot be reached without using the product. If a cash advance was not already in your week, the referral is not a reason to start one.
- Know that the referrer has homework too. The person referring you must hold an active Dave Checking Account and must already have taken and repaid at least one ExtraCash advance of $25 or more. A friend who has the app but has never borrowed gets nothing.
- Use the referral code when you download the app, and open both accounts. The person joining must be genuinely new to Dave, must download the app using the code, and must open a Dave Checking Account and a Dave ExtraCash Account. Only one bonus exists per person, credited to the code entered at enrolment.
- Expect a membership fee before you can borrow. Membership is up to $5 a month, renewing on the same date each month until you cancel, and it starts before the reward arrives.
- Take the advance, then actually repay it. Nothing is credited until the advance is repaid, and the person joining has to do it before the promotion ends.
- Use the boost inside 60 days or lose it. It is worth nothing if your next borrowing need falls in month three.
- Be aware it is not private. Dave's terms say participation may result in other people knowing about your membership status and your advance activity, and that taking part means consenting to that.
The fine print that can still cost you the reward
Dave can withdraw the offer whenever it likes. Its referral terms reserve the right to cancel or modify the reward, or end your eligibility, at any time with or without prior notice. There is no published end date and no revision date on the page.
The referral page names a different bank from the rest of the site. Dave's referral terms attribute the boosts to Evolve Bank and Trust, while every current Dave page names Coastal Community Bank as the banking partner. The mismatch suggests the referral page has not been revisited in a while, so check what your app tells you.
Five is the hard ceiling. The boost can be redeemed once for each referred friend, up to five referrals, and each one is an unpublished increase to a borrowing limit, so there is no theoretical maximum in dollars.
Express fees are quoted at the moment you ask. Dave's terms say express fees for expedited transfers are disclosed when you request the transfer, and an express fee on an advance is due when you repay. The only figure Dave publishes openly is the 1.5% on external debit card transfers.
Is it worth your time?
Only if you were already going to use ExtraCash. The reward is not cash, its size is unpublished, it evaporates in 60 days, and the route to it runs through a loan on both sides, a membership fee, and an advance fee of at least $5. If money is tight this month and you need $100 until payday, Dave charging no interest and no late fees is a real advantage, and using a friend's code then costs you nothing extra. What we would not do is take out an advance you did not need in order to unlock permission to take out a larger one. If it is a signup bonus you are after, a bank account that pays cash for moving a direct deposit is a better use of the same half hour.
