Ting gives you $25 in bill credit for joining through a customer's link, under a clause dated November 2020 that lets Ting take it back.
Ting's referral page puts it in one line: “Your friend gets a $25 Ting Mobile credit.” The credit is not a discount code and not money: it is applied to your account after you activate your first device, and the help page says any unused credit rolls over to the next month while anything your bill exceeds it by is charged to your payment method. Ting's Terms of Service add that Refer a Friend rewards “carry no cash value and are completely non-refundable.”
What pays what
| You, signing up through a Ting customer's link and activating a device | $25 credit |
|---|---|
| Anyone who signs up without a link | $0 |
| A credit Ting decides was earned by abusing the program | Rescinded |
We also reserve the right to rescind credits that were previously issued if we determine that the program has been abused. Our Refer a Friend and Marketing rewards carry no cash value and are completely non-refundable.
The same section says Ting can cancel a referral code at any time. The document carries the line “These terms are effective as of November 22, 2020”.
Do this, in this order
- Get the link from a Ting customer you know, not from a page like this one. Customers find it in their Ting account under the Refer Your Friends tab, and Ting's help article for existing customers says they can share it directly or through built-in social share buttons. This site carries no Ting link because the terms treat public posting as abuse.
- Click the link before you buy or activate anything, then create the account from that page. Ting's help article for referred customers walks through it: open the link, click Sign in, choose Create an account, fill in your name, email and contact number. Then activate; the article says you can transfer your number or activate a new one. Nothing we read requires a port-in or names a qualifying plan.
- Activate a line and look for green in Billing History. The referral page says the credit is applied after the person referred activates their first device. If yours is missing, the help page says activation may not be complete or the link may not have applied, and to contact Ting.
- Spend it on the bill and know the rest is non-refundable. The credit comes off the first bill; the help page says: “If your bill exceeds your credit, the balance will be charged to your payment method.” Section 2.6 of the terms says “Monthly service charges, taxes and fees are non-refundable.” and section 2.4 says taxes and regulatory fees are added at the end of the billing cycle, so $25 of credit does not make a $25 plan free.
What Ting's pages say, and what they do not publish
Your $25 is the same on every page. The help article written for the person who was referred says: “$25 in credit when you sign up using a referral link.” If you refer friends yourself, the referral landing page and the help article written for existing customers say: “$50 credit for your first referral. $25 credit for each referral after that.”
The rules are nearly six years old. The only binding text on the program is section 2.5 of a Terms of Service document effective November 22, 2020. Ting's referral landing page shows a 2021 copyright line and the promotions page still lists a Motorola moto e (2020) at $99. The program is live, the amounts on the landing page are current as of the day we read them, and the contract behind them has not been re-dated.
What a plan costs today. The plan comparison page we tried returned Not Found. Ting's referral example page prices Flex at $10 a month for talk and text, Set 5 at $25 a month with 5GB and Unlimited at $45 a month with 22GB. Treat those as Ting's worked examples, not a price list.
No end date, no expiry, no plan list. No page we read gives the program a closing date, says whether an unused credit expires, or names the plans that qualify. The Terms of Service say “You represent that you are 18 years of age or older.” and contain an arbitration clause and class action waiver in section 2.13.
Is it worth your time?
If you had already picked Ting and you know a customer, ask for the link before you order a phone or activate one. It costs you nothing and it costs Ting's customer nothing. Then read the $25 for what it is: at Ting's own example prices, two and a half months of Flex at $10 or one month of Set 5 at $25, taken off your bills, with taxes and fees still owed on top.
Do not go looking for a Ting link on a deal page. The terms call that abuse, and a rescinded credit shows up as a charge to your payment method. And if nobody you know is on Ting, there is no public sign-up bonus to fall back on: the promotions page lists the referral offer, a 2020 phone and a Consumer Reports rating, and nothing else.
