Navy Federal pays a new member $400 for joining with code CHK26SRC by December 31, 2026. A paycheck is one way to qualify, not the only one.
Three steps, all in Navy Federal's disclosure. Join with promo code CHK26SRC between 10/1/2026 and 12/31/2026, online, in branch or by phone. Open a checking account as primary owner by 12/31/2026. Complete qualifying direct deposit transactions by 4/30/2027. A recurring paycheck, military pay or government benefit counts. So do your own deposits of at least $500, recurring for at least 3 out of 4 consecutive months. The offer is new as of October 1, 2026, and Navy Federal says it “can expire anytime without prior notice.”

Offer valid 10/1/2026–12/31/2026 and can expire anytime without prior notice. Must be 18 years of age or older. To qualify for the $400 bonus, complete each of the following items: 1) Join Navy Federal online, in branch, or by phone using promo code CHK26SRC between 10/1/2026 and 12/31/2026, 2) Open a checking account (as primary owner) by 12/31/2026, AND 3) Complete qualifying direct deposit transactions, as defined below, by 4/30/2027.
Do this, in this order
- Check that you can join at all. Navy Federal is not open to everyone. Its site says: “Our field of membership is open to the armed forces, the DoD, veterans and their families.” The offer's own list adds DoD civilian employees and contractors. You must be 18 or older.
- Join with code CHK26SRC between October 1 and December 31, 2026. Online, in branch and by phone all count now. A phone join has one extra condition: “Applicants opening membership by phone must electronically accept the Membership Application Terms & Conditions to qualify for this offer.” The code goes in when you join. The terms describe no way to add it later.
- Open a checking account as primary owner by December 31, 2026. Put at least $5 in the Membership Savings Account and leave it there. Navy Federal says: “$5 minimum balance is required to open and maintain Membership Savings Account and to obtain bonus.”
- Complete qualifying direct deposit by April 30, 2027. Any one of four routes works. A recurring ACH from an employer, military pay or certain government pay or benefits. Mobile, ATM or branch deposits, FedNow or Real Time Payment network payments, or third-party payments to your Navy Federal debit card, totaling at least $500 and recurring for at least 3 out of 4 consecutive months. Or monthly non-payroll ACH or payroll allotments on the same $500 and 3 out of 4 months test, as primary or secondary owner. The routes that need three months need a head start: open in late December and begin deposits in January.
- Then keep both accounts healthy until the money lands. “Checking account must remain open and with a positive balance at the time of bonus crediting.” Navy Federal adds: “It may take up to 120 days to confirm your direct deposit establishment.” The payout line reads: “Bonus will be deposited to the new member’s Membership Savings Account by 7/30/2027.” The limit is one $400 bonus per member, and any tax on it is yours.
Where the $400 gets lost
Joining in the summer counts against you. Existing members are excluded. So is anyone whose Membership Share Savings account closed within 270 days before the new membership. Closing an account and rejoining is not a quick way back in.
Cash and app deposits need you as primary owner. The checking account must be yours as primary owner. Mobile, ATM, branch, FedNow, Real Time and debit card deposits count only into accounts where you are the primary owner.
Closing early forfeits it. The money can take until July 30, 2027. A checking account that is closed, or not in positive balance, when the bonus is credited pays nothing, and the Membership Savings Account must be open and in good standing.
The end date is not a promise. The window runs to December 31, 2026, but the offer can end sooner without notice. If you plan to join, join early.
A referral adds nothing we could find
When we read Navy Federal's three membership referral pages on September 18, 2026, all were forms that email an invitation. None named a reward for the person joining. One opened by saying its offer had expired. The $400 depends on code CHK26SRC, which anyone eligible can type in, invited or not.
The offers that ended
On September 18, 2026 this same Navy Federal page offered $200 with code CHK26MJ, for joining between 5/1/2026 and 6/30/2026. That version excluded accounts opened by phone through Member Services. A campaign page for America's 250th offered $250 with code AM250CHK, for joining between 7/1/2026 and 7/31/2026. Both have ended. If you joined inside one of those windows, your qualifying direct deposits are due by 10/30/2026 for the $200 or 11/30/2026 for the $250.
Is it worth your time?
Yes, if you can join. $400 is twice what this page paid in June, and phone joins now count. The deposit test does not need an employer. Three months of $500 from your own accounts meets it.
The price is patience. Navy Federal gives itself until July 30, 2027 to pay. If you cannot join Navy Federal, the first three below each publish a bonus open to a wider public, with terms we have read.
