Lemonade's referral terms name the five excluded states and the 30-day clock, but not what anyone is paid, and no public Lemonade page fills the gap.
The whole program is one paragraph on a page titled Referral Program Terms and Conditions, dated August 2025. It opens with who may take part, defines a sign-up, and closes with the right to end it all. Between those sentences there is no dollar figure, no credit figure and no word for what the reward is. We read it twice, then read Lemonade's FAQ and its Giveback page, which say nothing about referrals at all. Other sites quote a number; we cannot find it on any Lemonade page, so we do not repeat it.
What pays what
| You, starting an application through a friend's link and receiving an offer within 30 days | Unpublished |
|---|---|
| You, if you get the offer but never buy | Still a qualified referral |
| A link from a friend living in LA, MI, MS, WA or WV | Not in the program |
| A link from a friend whose policy is not in good standing | Not in the program |
A “sign-up” is a bona fide, truthful and legitimate (as determined by Lemonade) application, submitted by a unique new user through the digital link provided through Lemonade Insurance Agency, LLC that results in an offer of insurance within 30 days of the new user first starting an application.
That is the only clock in the terms, and it runs from the day you first start an application. The terms also say the program “is available to individuals (residing outside of LA, MI, MS, WA, WV) in good standing with an insurance policy issued by a licensed insurance affiliate of Lemonade, Inc.”
Do this, in this order
- Decide on the insurance first, the referral second. Since no page says what the reward is, it cannot tip the decision. Lemonade's FAQ and Giveback page, which explain how the company handles premiums and claims, do not mention the referral program.
- Check your friend qualifies. They need a Lemonade policy in good standing and an address outside Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Washington and West Virginia. The terms do not say what happens if they move.
- Get the link from their account, because there is no public referral page. The terms speak of the digital link provided through Lemonade Insurance Agency, LLC. On September 25, 2026, lemonade.com/refer, lemonade.com/refer-a-friend and lemonade.com/referral all returned not found. The terms also carry a line for your friend: “Reminder: get permissions before texting friends promotions.”
- Start the application through the link and reach an offer within 30 days. The terms define a sign-up as a genuine application, judged by Lemonade, submitted by a unique new user through the link, that results in an offer of insurance within 30 days of the user first starting an application. “Purchase of insurance is not required to qualify for referral reward.”
- If you buy, put the renewal date in your calendar. The Terms of Service, last updated June 24, 2026, say that if you pay monthly, your card is charged automatically from the second installment, that a non-life policy runs one year, and that your card is charged for subsequent renewals. You can cancel the policy in the app or by email, and any premium due back on cancellation is refunded to the card you paid with.
What Lemonade does not publish
The reward. Not its size, not its form, not who receives it, not when it arrives. The terms say a referral reward exists and stop there. We checked twice, on the referral terms page and again on the FAQ and Giveback pages.
A public referral page. Three likely addresses returned not found, and the press site at press.lemonade.com returned an empty page. The site's footer lists a Partners Program alongside Join the Team and Investor Relations; its own terms were not readable as a public page, so we do not know whether it is an affiliate track.
An end date. There is none. Instead: “Lemonade reserves the right to modify or terminate this Program at any time, with or without notice.”
How renewal works, except where a state makes it say. The Terms of Service carry a disclosure for Massachusetts customers: “Upon policy renewal you will be expected to make regular premium payments moving forward. If you do not cancel your upcoming payment for your insurance policy by the policy expiration date, you will automatically be charged the new policy premium beginning on your policy's renewal effective date.” The same document tells every customer that the card is charged for subsequent renewals of non-life insurance. The Massachusetts wording is simply the clearest version.
Is it worth your time?
If you were going to get a Lemonade quote anyway and a friend with a policy offers a link, using it costs you nothing and needs no purchase: an offer of insurance within 30 days is enough for the referral to count. Just do not expect to know what either of you earned until Lemonade tells you, because its own terms never do.
Think twice if the referral is the reason you are looking at Lemonade at all. An insurance policy is a year-long contract that renews and charges itself, and the reward for signing one is a figure the company chose not to print, closed to five states, and cancellable without notice. That is not an offer to plan around.
If you refer: the terms limit rewards to 10 qualified referrals over 12 months, and do not say whether that window resets each calendar year or rolls.
